Jungle Products Organic Red Palm Oil - 14 oz. (397g)

Jungle Products Red Palm Oil is sourced from organic palms from Brazil. Their Red Palm Oil is RSPO certified. The principal objective of RSPO is "to promote the growth and use of sustainable palm oil through co-operation within the supply chain and open dialogue between its stakeholders". Jungle Products Red Palm Oil also holds an IBD certification which focuses on both sustainable and social production processes. They offer this exclusive oil in its natural state, having been made in small batches by hand. The process of extraction is done by hand, and no chemical solvents are ever used in production.

This oil has been used for centuries as a culinary, medicinal, and cosmetic favorite. It is considered the "best" among indigenous cultures, used for special meals and guests. It has not been refined in any way and as a result contains all of its important phyto-nutrients. Red Palm Oil is a rich source of Vitamin A in the form of Cartenoids. It is also a wonderful natural source of Vitamin E containing the full spectrum tocopherols and tocotrienols. Their oil is not hydrogenated and contains no cholesterol.

    Some benefits include:

    • Contains natural antioxidants that act as scavengers to mop up oxygen free radicals and are believed to play an important preventative role in cellular ageing, arteriolsclerosis, and cancer.
    • Promotes weight loss and boosts metabolism
    • May help lower blood pressure and lower cholesterol levels.
    • Excellent stability at high temperatures.
    • Suitable for Vegan, Vegetarian, and Non-Dairy Diets

HOW THEIR RED PALM OIL IS MADE

    Harvesting and Transportation of Bunches.
The oil palm tree produces fresh fruit bunches all year round, but there are periods of high and low productivity. The majority of the oil is formed in the last two weeks of this process and a correct judgment of the ripeness is essential to assure a good production. The bunch is removed from the plant by hand with the aid of harvesting tools (sacho and scythe).

The main extraction step processes are:

Sterilization: The bunches are cooked with live steam for 90 – 120 minutes. Sterilization objectives are: Lipase enzyme inactivation, making fruits easily release from bunches, making fruits softer, making nut/pulp separation easier, and coagulation of proteins.

Threshing: After bunches are cooked they are fed to the thresher which is a drum with holes in the side where bunches are centrifuged to separate the fruits.

Digestion and Pressing: Fruits are lifted by a cup elevator to the top of the digester vessel. This vessel contains a live steam heating system and agitator shafts. The main aim during digestion is to break oily cells, in order to make oil extraction easier. This process takes 30 minutes at 90 – 100 ºC. Pressing is made just after the material leaves the digestion vessels and it produces a slurry made of approximately 53% oil, 40% water and 7% solids and also a cake that consists of fiber and nuts.

Clarification, Purification, and Packaging: This step consists of separation of oil from impurities (water and fine solids) made in settling tanks and three phase decanters. Recovered oil is then purified in plate centrifuges and dried under vacuum. Finally, the Extra Virgin Palm Oil is filtered to remove any remaining particulate matter and packaged in drums.

Oil Extraction Losses: Empty bunches and solids from clarification are used as organic fertilizers on certified organic plantation. Fibers still have around 7% oil and shells are used in the boilers as fuel. As a result, all extraction mills are able to generate their own electricity by steam turbines.

    THE IMPORTANCE OF THIS PROCESS

Red palm oil is also used in health and beauty care. Local herbal doctors believe that red palm oil has strong anti-microbial properties. It is also used as a to counter the effect of poisons and as a laxative. Red palm oil is also widely used on the skin as a moisturizer and healing agent. It is also an excellent base for smooth, gentle soaps.

    THE IMPORTANCE OF PALM VARIETY

Plant breeders created the hybrid variety Tenera by crossing the Dura and Pisifera. The Dura has a large nut with a thick shell and thin mesocarp. The Pisifera is a small fruit with no shell. The Tenera fruit has a thick mesocarp and a thin husk. The Tenera nut is small and is easily shelled to release the palm kernel. The Tenera is considered a better variety because it yields a higher amount of oil and it is easy to extract the oil.

    THE HISTORY OF PALM OIL

The oil palm, Elaeis guineensis, is native to equatorial West Africa. The main oil palm belt of West Africa runs through the southern latitudes of Sierra Leone, Liberia, Ivory Coast, Ghana, Togo, Benin, Nigeria, Cameroon and into Zaire and Angola. Humans have consumed palm oil for tens of thousands of years. Written records of palm oil are available from Portuguese travelers to West Africa in the 15th century. However, fatty residues with analytical characteristics of oxidized palm oil dating back to 5000 BC have been found in Egyptian pyramids.

Exports of palm oil to Europe in large quantities began in the late 18th century. After the anti-slavery legislation in the first part of the 19th century, traders needed an alternative to the lucrative slavery trade from West Africa to North & South America and the Caribbean, and trade in palm oil increased tremendously. The establishment of trade in palm oil from West Africa was mainly the result of the Industrial Revolution in Europe. As people in Europe began to take sanitation and hygiene seriously, demand for soap increased, resulting in the demand for vegetable oil suitable for soap manufacture and other technical uses, such as tinplating. In the early 1870s, exports of palm oil from the Niger Delta were 25,000 to 30,000 tons per year and by 1911 the British West African territories exported 87,000 tons.

Africa led the world in production and export of palm oil throughout the first half of the 20th century, lead by Nigeria and Zaire. By 1966, however, Malaysia and Indonesia had surpassed Africa's total palm oil production. The oil palm was introduced into South Asia in 1848 as an ornamental tree. Commercial exploitation as an export crop started in Sumatra after 1910 and in Malaysia in the 1920s. Palm oil developments in South East Asia continued, and today, South East Asia exports far more palm oil than Africa, with Malaysia producing over 50% of the world's total refined palm oil exports.

    FAQ's:

    Is fat bad for you?
No, actually a diet that contains fats from animal and vegetable sources provides you with a concentrated source of energy. Fat also provides building blocks for cell membranes as well as hormones and hormone like substances. When they make fats a part of their meals it slows down absorption so that they can wait longer before thei next meal without a feeling of hunger or cravings. Fats also act as a catalyst for the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K. Fats are also necessary for mineral absorption and for a host of other processes. Not to mention they taste great!

What is the difference between good fat and bad fat?
Unfortunately Americans have been misinformed about the importance of fat in their diet. Fats, especially saturated, have been unfairly blamed for a milieu of diseases and health problems in their country. The truth of the matter is fat is a necessary component of a nutritious and satisfying diet, guaranteed to provide us with the vitality and longevity they need to live in today’s world and fight off the threats of harmful disease. “Bad” fats such as trans fat are slowly being recognized as the cause of the unhealthy condition of America today. Trans fatty acids are liquid oils made into shortening or margarine through hydrogenation. Studies have recently revealed that serious health problems can be a result of consuming hydrogenated products containing trans fatty acids. The FDA claims that no amount of trans fat is safe for consumption and food products are being forced to label the exact amount of hydrogenated fat per product.

How do I use Coconut and Red Palm Oil in my diet?
These two fats have been used for centuries by indigenous cultures for culinary, cosmetic, and medicinal uses. The unique health benefits of both Coconut and Red Palm Oils retain their potency whether used as a cooking oil, or applied topically, or even as a healing salve. They have learned to enjoy these oils in traditional recipes gathered from all over the world. They can be used in the place of any other oil you may currently use for you daily cooking needs such as frying, sautéing, baking, or as a spread or dressing. One of the exciting attributes of these healthy oils is that the potent phytonutrients they contain remain intact even when heated to extremely high temperatures. They encourage you to experiment with Red Palm and Coconut oils in your kitchen and discover their wonderful flavor and versatility. Also, please see their recipes board to find yummy recipes and ideas!

Do saturated fats cause heart disease?
Heart disease and other degenerative illnesses are caused by a series of other harmful factors. Please consider the following concise explanation by Mary Enig, PhD a highly acclaimed nutritionist and expert in her field: “The cause of heart disease is not animal fats and cholesterol but rather a number of factors inherent in modern diets, including the excess consumption of vegetable oils and hydrogenated fats, excess consumption of refined carbohydrates in the form of sugar and white flour; mineral deficiencies, particularly low levels of protective magnesium and iodine; deficiencies of vitamins, particularly of vitamin C, needed for the integrity of blood vessel walls, and of antioxidants like selenium and vitamin E, which protect us from free radicals; and finally, the disappearance of antimicrobial fats from the food supple, namely animal fats and tropical oils.”

How does Jungle Products ensure safe, sanitary production facilities?
They have strict quality control standards to ensure not only the purest oil used in their products, but they also use the least amount of processing to extract the oil in order to maintain the integrity of the raw material. The palm fruit is carefully inspected by hand and is picked by hand for only the best quality. Once picked, the palm fruit is left for 36 to soften. Then the fruits are plucked, washed, and steamed for only a few minutes to soften the pulp. It is then poured into a large mortar or frapper and pounded until the flesh separates from the nut. The nut is then set aside to dry. At this time, the oil of the palm fruit begins to appear. To remove any excess water, the red oil is heated slightly and then sits for 24 hours to allow for all impurities to be removed and sink to the bottom of the tank. To ensure that no additional impurities are intact, the red oil is filtered through the traditional gravity system. The coconuts are grown naturally in their wild state and have never been touched by chemicals or fertilizers. The oil from the coconut is processed in the “old” way by hand. This gentle process retains the natural preservatives of the organic coconut so that it can have a much longer shelf life than a refined coconut oil and in addition, will be able to withstand higher temperatures during cooking. The actual pressing process comes when the organic coconuts are harvested and immediately after the white meat of the coconuts are separated from the nut, shredded, dried and then pressed.

Is the fat-free diet good for me?
Absolutely not!! For thousands of years fat has been an important part of healthy populations. Unfortunately misinformation concerning the health benefits of fats has led to decline in their consumption as well as an adverse effect on the health of their country. It is their opinion that the health benefits contained in these two fats - very high levels of antioxidants, in the form of full spectrum tocotrienols, tocopherols, and carotenes, the effective antiviral agents of lauric acid and caprilyic acid, and the anti-rancidity, non trans fatty properties of the fully saturated molecules-are all features that will benefit everyone.

If I eat tropical oils, won't I gain weight?
No!! Fat is an essential part of balanced nutrition and general well being. With news and research breaking daily on the health benefits of tropical oils as well as the dangers of Trans Fats, Jungle Products is excited to share the life changing properties of Red Palm and Coconut oils. Indigenous populations have understood for centuries that tropical oils are essential to the maintenance of healthy weight. It is only recently that studies and medical research began to reveal the slimming properties of Red Palm and Coconut oils.

    What are tocotrienols?
Tocotrienols are part of the Vitamin E family. Tocotrienols have similar structure to tocopherols (Alpha-Tocopherol as the most common Vitamin E in the market), but contain three double bonds in the carbon side chain of the molecule. The Vitamin E family is comprised of eight different compounds: alpha, beta, gamma and delta- tocotrienols and tocopherols.

Cool new product to me. I like to vary my choices... coconut oil, ghee, olive oil, and sometimes organic butter.... and to add palm from a good source is a welcome addition. There are health advantages to this according to the literature. I just like to give my body a little variety of the healthier oils.

Very good, if pricey. Red palm oil is full of alpha-carotene, beta-carotene and lycopene as well as tocopherols and tocotrienols, members of the vitamin E family. I use it for its nutrient value in a mush I make for my African Grey parrot, whose diet in nature would include a lot of palm berries. Unfortunately, palm oil's popularity has resulted in acreage losses of the natural habitat of the orangutan due to forest clearing to make way for oil-palm monoculture. I hope you are using sustainable sources.
