    Mercury And Tuna

The Food and Drug Administration and Environmental Protection Agency released a joint revised consumer advisory on mercury in fish. The advisory targets women who might become pregnant, women who are pregnant, nursing mothers and young children. That same month, the FDA also posted a document on their website titled Fish is an Important Part of a Balanced Diet. In a separate document on their website, the FDA states the key parts of the advisory:

"Fish and shellfish are an important part of a healthy diet. Fish and shellfish contain high quality protein and other essential nutrients, are low in saturated fat and contain omega-3 fatty acids. A well balanced diet that includes a variety of fish and shellfish can contribute to heart health and children's proper growth and development. Thus, women and young children in particular should include fish or shellfish in their diets due to the many nutritional benefits.

By following these 3 recommendations for selecting and eating fish or shellfish, women and young children will receive the benefits of eating fish and shellfish and be confident that they have reduced their exposure to the harmful effects of mercury.

    • Do not eat Shark, Swordfish, King Mackerel, or Tilefish because they contain high levels of mercury.
    • Eat up to 12 ounces (2 average meals) a week of a variety of fish and shellfish that are lower in mercury.
    • Five of the most commonly eaten fish that are low in mercury are shrimp, canned light tuna, salmon, pollock, and catfish.
    • Another commonly eaten fish, albacore ("white") tuna has more mercury than canned light tuna. So, when choosing your two meals of fish and shellfish, you may eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) of albacore tuna per week.
    • Check local advisories about the safety of fish caught by family and friends in your local lakes, rivers, and coastal areas. If no advice is available, eat up to 6 ounces (one average meal) per week of fish you catch from local waters, but don't consume any other fish during that week.

Mercury is a naturally occurring element in the earth's crust, and therefore is also present in trace amounts in all living organisms. As elemental mercury enters the water, biological processes occur which transform it to its toxic form methyl mercury. This toxic form builds up to higher levels in large, long-lived fish. According to the EPA, "Health problems caused by mercury depend on how much has entered your body, how it entered your body, how long you have been exposed to it, and how your body responds to the mercury."

The FDA has set as their action level 1 ppm of mercury. This level provides a wide margin of safety, as it is ten times the level at which the most sensitive people will experience health problems. In lab tests run between 1990 and 2003 by the FDA, the average level of mercury in canned light tuna is 0.12 ppm, and in albacore 0.35 ppm. Very low in mercury are sardines at an average of 0.02 ppm, herring at 0.04, crab at 0.06, and anchovies at 0.04. Salmon, oysters, clams, shrimp contain less mercury than lab tests are able to detect.

Fish and seafood in general remains a wise choice for a healthy diet.

Finally, a study from the U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms that mercury levels from fish consumption for women and young children in the U.S. are very low and "not of concern." The CDC report also confirms that no child in the U.S. has mercury levels that are even close to the EPA's reference dose and are not at risk from consuming seafood.

    Sustainable Seafood

Crown Prince is proud of their commitment to seek and source sustainably harvested fish certified by third parties. Please be advised that the reason some of our products are not assessed or certified yet is either due to lack of time on the part of a reviewing body (like Monterey Bay Aquarium) or lack of a unified group of stakeholders requesting assessment (such as Marine Stewardship Council.) Lack of assessment or certification does not automatically mean that a fish harvest is unsustainable. All countries from which they harvest fish have management programs in place to maintain a good harvest level; they want to have fish stocks for future generations just as they do.

Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) is a global organization working with fisheries, seafood companies, scientists, conservation groups and the public to promote the best environmental choice in seafood. MSC has established a guide for sustainability. Assessments are done by third party firms and those passing can use the MSC logo under a logo use contract.

The Monterey Bay Aquarium (MBA) Seafood Watch program helps consumers and businesses make choices for healthy oceans. MBA has established a guide for sustainability based on scientific research which is peer reviewed.

Blue Ocean Institute is a conservation organization that uses art and literature to translate scientific information into language people can understand and use to make better choices on behalf of the sea.

Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) works together with the United Nations system to support global sustainable development initiatives in order to secure responsible fisheries worldwide.

Are Crown Prince products sustainably caught?

GMO stands for Genetically Modified Organism, an animal or plant that has been altered using genetic engineering. Read our GMO Statement for more detailed information.

Do Crown Prince products contain GMOs?
Crown Prince products DO NOT contain GMOs. Canned fish is not a manufactured product, but is wild harvested from the oceans of our planet. Our customers can be assured that Crown Prince only offers the best that our oceans can provide - unadulterated by genetic modification.

Is there mercury in canned tuna?
Mercury is a naturally occurring element in the earth's crust, and therefore is also present in trace amounts in all living organisms.

How much mercury is in canned tuna?
In lab tests run between 2002 and 2004 by the FDA, the average level of mercury in canned light tuna is 0.12 ppm, and in albacore 0.35 ppm. The FDA has set as their action level 1 ppm of mercury. This level provides a wide margin of safety, as it is ten times the level at which the most sensitive people will experience health problems. For more information, visit our Mercury and Tuna page.

    What is omega-3?
Omega-3 fatty acids are polyunsaturated essential fatty acids that are found predominantly in deep-sea salt water fish. These fatty acids are found in higher amounts in cold water fish. There is evidence of a number of health benefits from eating fish rich in these fatty acids.

Do Crown Prince products contain MSG?
Monosodium glutamate is used in Crown Prince and Ocean Prince crab meat, chopped and minced clams, and clam sauce. There is no MSG present in any Crown Prince Natural product. As always, anyone with food allergies or sensitivities should carefully read all labels.

    What is gluten?
Gluten is a protein commonly found in many types of grains (specifically wheat, barley, oats and rye).

Are Crown Prince products gluten free?
Yes, all of their canned seafood products are gluten free and are not processed with any ingredients known to contain gluten. Crown Prince seafood products are listed as such by the Celiac Sprue Association. Please be advised that our packing facilities are not certified gluten free and cross-contamination could occur. As always, anyone with food allergies or sensitivities should carefully read all labels, especially products in sauces. On occasion, sauce formulations may change.

What are Trans Fats or Trans Fatty Acids?
Trans fats, or trans fatty acids are a type of fat formed when hydrogen is added to liquid oils under high heat to turn them into solid fats like shortening and stick margarine. These trans fats can increase the risk of heart disease by increasing the amount of LDL, or "bad" cholesterol, and lowering the amount of HDL, or "good" cholesterol in the bloodstream.

    BPA Free Cans

Crown Prince is concerned about the issue of BPA (Bisphenol A) in cans. BPA has been used in can linings for decades to prevent food spoilage but could possibly act as an endocrine disruptor, mimicking estrogen and thereby disrupting the body's chemical message system. Recently the FDA decided not to ban BPA pending further study. While Crown Prince acknowledges the position of the FDA, we will continue to move forward, where possible, with our transition to BPA-free packaging. As always, our goal is to provide our customers the most sustainable, freshly harvested, and safely packaged canned seafood from around the world.

The Crown Prince, Crown Prince Natural, and Ocean Prince lines include product packed in eight foreign countries as well as the United States. We therefore have to work in each locality with available canning materials. Several countries from which we import are strongly influenced by European Union (EU) standards; at this time the European Union does not consider the small amount of BPA in can linings a health issue. Due to this fact many can manufacturers in these countries do not stock adequate or consistent supplies, if at all, of BPA free cans. Crown Prince wishes to continue to be able to provide our customers good quality, modestly priced canned seafood with as little environmental impact as possible.

Crown Prince is currently able to supply the following products in BPA free containers:
