About Henry & Lisa's Natural Seafood

We launched EcoFish in 1999 with the belief that there are many concerned people just like us who care about where their food comes from, care for the environment, and desire a source of all natural premium quality seafood from environmentally sustainable fisheries.

Having spent 10 years in the seafood industry — traveling around the globe visiting seafood exchanges from Tokyo to Paris, Beijing to Madrid, we witnessed the astounding volume of seafood being sold each day on these exchanges, and noticed the size of many of the fish decreasing. Simultaneously, there was more and more news that numerous species were being fished to the point of commercial extinction (the point at which it is uneconomical to fish for them any longer because there are so few target fish left). It became very evident to us that the world is harvesting the oceans far faster than the oceans can replenish themselves, and these resources need better management.

In addition to our seafood industry experience, we have always had a deep respect for and great appreciation of the oceans. As a youngster, Henry was inspired by Jacques Cousteau, spent time volunteering at the New England Aquarium, and learned to scuba dive. Now as avid scuba divers and sea kayakers, whenever we have a chance, we love to explore new areas. While living on the Maine coast, we also had the good fortune and opportunity to have our own lobster boat and a few traps!

With these thoughts in mind, Henry sat down and began to write the EcoFish Business Plan. A lot has changed since then. Today you can find EcoFish in over 3,500 grocery/natural food stores and over 150 restaurants nationwide.  But a lot has stayed the same. We are still a small company with lofty goals and the belief that we all deserve choice, and given the tool to make good decisions, consumers will vote with their wallets and support healthy fisheries.

Henry & Lisa's Natural Seafood - EcoFish Solid White Albacore Tuna Sashimi Grade Fully Cooked Tenderloin - 5 oz. (141 g)

Henry & Lisa's Natural Seafood Eco Fish Solid White Albacore Tuna comes from family fishers in the Pacific Northwest troll fishery (Hook and Line). Due to the selective nature of troll gear and region of harvest, the otherwise common by-catch (catching untargeted species) of dolphins, turtles and shark is not an issue. These Albacore are abundant because they are prolific breeders, fast growing and wide-ranging.

    Dear Friends,
Thank you for your support! Henry & Lisa's mission is to be your family's trusted source for the world's healthiest, safest, highest quality sustainable seafood...naturally.

Congratulations, you have purchased the world's best tuna in a can! It all starts with the sashimi grade (yes, sashimi grade in a can!) tuna loins that their fisher friends in the Pacific Northwest catch on small family boats, on hook and line. They deep chill the tuna on-board within minutes, preserving the meat's peak freshness. At the local micro-cannery, only the best part of the loin is used, and the tuna is cooked only once in the can, in its own natural Omega-3 rich oils. Due to this process, and the right oils of this cold water species, their tuna is five times higher in heart-healthy Omega-3 than most brands. It is also much lower in mercury than most brands, because the tuna they use are smaller. The bottom line is this is the highest quality, healthiest, most sustainable canned tuna you can buy - gourmet all the way.

    Solid White Albacore Tuna

    • Sashimi grade, hand packed loin
    • Lower in mercury (small fish contain less mercury)
    • 5x's more omega-3's than conventionally canned tuna (2,800 mg per serving)
    • Convenient pop top cans
    • 12-5oz cans per case

There is no other seafood company like Henry & Lisa's!

    • Henry & Lisa's premium quality seafood is frozen within hours of harvest, they quick freeze all of their seafood at super-low temperatures with the latest technology, locking in peak freshness.
    • Henry & Lisa's proudly offers seafood exclusively from environmentally sustainable fisheries. Henry & Lisa's independent Seafood Advisory Board (conservationist from Environmental Defense, Monterey Bay Aquarium and other organizations) reviews and approves all of the species they offer.
    • Henry & Lisa's seafood is independently tested for contaminants by Seafood Safe, helping consumers maximize the health benefits of seafood.
    • Henry & Lisa's cares deeply for the future of the planet and the world of water, a portion of sales are donated to marine conservation and education efforts

Henry & Lisa's EcoFish Selection Criteria
At Henry & Lisa's EcoFish, they are dedicated to serving only the most sustainable sources of seafood. To guide them in this mission, they have assembled a Seafood Advisory Board comprised of some of the world's leading marine conservation scientists who help them research and recommend which species and fisheries to feature. The Board uses a diverse array of existing guidelines at their organizations as reference when assessing a fishery. Research scientists at the Monterey Bay Aquarium's Seafood Watch Program, Environmental Defense, Blue Ocean Institute and New England Aquarium recommend these fisheries to EcoFish.

EcoFish's ability to source from specific fisheries enables them to pinpoint the world's best examples of sustainability (please see Approved Species to read species-specific reports on why a particular fishery was chosen by their Seafood Advisory Board). Following are some of the major environmental issues that their Advisors consider when evaluating wild fisheries and aquaculture:

Wild Fisheries: When well-managed, fisheries have the potential to contribute to the economic and cultural well-being of many communities. Unfortunately, many fish stocks have been overharvested or caught in a manner that kills other animals and degrades the ocean. For EcoFish's approval, wild-caught fish must be landed in a manner that does not compromise the marine environment or unduly harm other species. Similarly, populations of the targeted species need to be able to support themselves and the fishery well into the future.

    • Biological Characteristics of Seafood: Some fish are extremely long-lived or late to mature. EcoFish carefully selects species that are likely to be resilient to fishing pressure.
    • Population Status: The fished species must have a healthy biomass in order to sustain itself and the fishery well into the future.
    • Management of Fishery: There must be a management plan in place that their Advisors are confident will sustain the fishery. Similarly, a species must be abundant and prolific enough to sustain moderate fishing pressure from selective gear.
    • Bycatch: There can be little or no bycatch in the fishery, and no endangered species can be part of the bycatch
    • Impact Harvesting Method has on Surrounding Environment: Fishing gear used to harvest the species cannot destroy marine habitats.

Aquaculture: Aquaculture will continue to play an important and growing role in feeding the world. Given that aquaculture can have positive or negative effects on the environment, EcoFish supports aquaculture that is environmentally and socially responsible. For EcoFish's approval, aquaculture operations need to be integrated into the natural ecosystem, diverse on local and regional scales, and beneficial to local communities.

    • Escapes: Farmed fish that escape into the surrounding marine environment have the potential to severely affect the aquatic environment. Henry & Lisa's advisors consider factors such as whether the species is native or exotic to the area it is farmed and the likelihood of the fish escaping the farm.
    • Habitat Issues: How does the farm fit in with the surrounding environment? Where does the water used to raise the seafood come from? Does the farm have natural predators, and how is this issue handled? Is spreading disease a concern? Farms should help to protect and enhance the surrounding environment.
    • Dependence on Wild Fisheries: EcoFish prefers farmed fish that don't require diets that include fishmeal and fishoil derived from wild fish. If they do require fishmeal, the protein conversion ratios should be below 1:1.
    • Pollution and Chemical Use: There can be absolutely no chemicals or additives utilized whatsoever in the growth or processing; all EcoFish products are all natural. The farm must not be a significant source of pollution for the surrounding environment.
    • Local Community: Does the farm benefit the local community?

When considering these issues, EcoFish's underlying philosophy employs the Precautionary Principle. Henry & Lisa's chooses to err on the side of conservation and only feature the most sustainable fisheries. This Principle was adopted by the UN Conference on the Environment and Development in 1992 and states that:

"In order to protect the environment, a precautionary approach should be widely applied, meaning that where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage to the environment, lack of full scientific certainty should not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation."

    Seafood Safe
Seafood Safe is the solution EcoFish customers deserve. Seafood Safe is a testing program for mercury and PCBs in seafood, two of the most prevalent contaminants found in seafood today. The label helps inform consumers of how many meals they can consume per month, without exposing themselves to dangerous levels of these contaminants. The recommendation is derived from EPA's Guidance for Assessing Chemical Contaminant Data for Use in Fish Advisories. To protect those adults that are at highest risk, women of childbearing age, the Seafood Safe label reflects safe consumption levels for this sub-population. Visit www.seafoodsafe.com to learn about program and view EcoFish test results.

    Meet The Fishers
Core to their mission here at EcoFish is to help support fishing communities that are harvesting sustainably. Many people think of large multi-national companies when they think of seafood, but what most people don't realize is there are thousands upon thousands of families fishing small boats all around the globe.

In the eleven years since they started EcoFish, they have made it a priority to forge out around the country and beyond to visit these families, so they can share their stories with you. From Alaska to Florida and Oregon to Wisconsin, there are family operations, wild and aquaculture, which depend on their support to carry on their tradition.

In Alaska, there are many families that spend the summer trolling for salmon. EcoFish has met salmon fishing families where their young children fish alongside their parents and receive a portion of the catch for a college savings account!

Henry & Lisa's have also met families in Alaska that spend the season on remote islands amongst brown bears, harvesting salmon using shore fixed gillnets. To visit them, they boarded a seaplane in Kodiak and set down in a cove near Shelikof Straight. The Byrnes have been coming here for years, and their children hope to carry on the tradition. Henry & Lisa have stayed at remote fish camps on Bristol Bay, learned about their way of life, and shared stories around a huge table, feasting on sockeye salmon caught that day.

On the coast of Oregon there is a fleet of boats that troll for Albacore Tuna, many of these boats are "freezer boats" meaning they have blast freezers on board and within minutes after being caught the tuna is in the hold being quickly frozen to -40 degrees. This premier handling means the finished product is superior. Sashimi Grade. They were lucky enough to meet many of the fleet because it was stormy and they were in port!

On to Palmyra, Wisconsin, where you will find a family trout business that has been farming trout since the 1960's. On 80 acres of pristine forests and valleys, artesian springs feed 2.4 million gallons of pure crystal-clear water through 50 fresh, cold ponds every day. These deep underground springs maintain water temperature at 50 degrees year-round. Their all-natural trout farm is a model, and the type of family business they strive to support.

    Henry & Lisa's Mission

    • Provide only the most sustainable, highest quality, healthiest, all natural, most delicious seafood to their customers.
    • Help support sustainable fisheries (wild & aquaculture), and their fishing communities by featuring their sustainable seafood products and adding value to their catch.
    • Help reverse the decline of marine bio-diversity by encouraging a shift in consumer demand away from over-exploited fisheries.
    • Offer a level of customer service unmatched in the seafood industry.
    • Accentuate the positive — highlight fishery success stories by increasing demand for these products, creating an incentive for others to adopt sustainable fishing practices.
    • Support marine conservation efforts through collaboration with conservation, research and educational organizations worldwide.
    • Raise consciousness of the threats to the world's oceans by providing a credible source of environmentally responsible seafood to the rapidly growing consumer demographics seeking environmentally sustainable products.
    • Set a good example for corporate America by striving for the "Triple Bottom Line" — operate a profitable business that's also responsible to its community and the environment.

    Why is all this important?
Core to the health of coastal communities is a vibrant and sustainable fishery. Like family farms across the country, traditional fishing communities are disappearing, threatened by large corporate factory farming. EcoFish's goal is to help support these local fishing economies by purchasing their sustainable catch, helping the tradition to be passed on to the next generation.

Supporting these fishing communities goes hand-in-hand with their sustainability mission, because often times small-scale family fishers are also using much more sustainable fishing techniques than large corporations. Additionally, many small-scale family fishers live in the communities they fish from, which enables their money to be left in those communities, supporting their way of life. When possible, they also strive to have their catch processed in their community, which allows the jobs from the added value to stay there. Henry & Lisa's also seeks out Fishermen's Co-ops, where the fishers own the business, and profits stay with them.

Good tuna but I don't agree that it's sahimi grade tuna. The tuna has tuna flakes added or is chunked. But it is still very good tuna in BPA free can. Only problem is that it is costly!
