About Ginger
Ginger grows best in hot and humid climates. The ginger used in this blend comes from a small farmer group on Sri Lanka where the roots are harvested after one year of growth and dried in hot air ovens to ensure the essential oils are preserved.
Ginger became so popular in Europe that it was included in every table setting, like salt and pepper. The underground rhizomes are gathered after a year of growth. After harvesting the rhizomes are washed then dried. The ginger is dried in hot air ovens to ensure its delicious essential oils are preserved at optimum potency. Ginger can come with the skin (LHS) or slightly 'scrubbed' when it has a white appearance (RHS). In India ginger is used fresh to spice teas especially in winter.
Ginger has been important in Chinese medicine for many centuries, and is mentioned in the writings of Confucius. It is also named in the Koran, the sacred book of the Moslems, indicating it was known in Arab countries as far back as 650 A.D. It was one of the earliest spice known in Western Europe, used since the ninth century.

Pukka Herbs Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe for children to drink Pukka herbal teas?
Pukka do not recommend their teas to any child under 1 year old without the advice of a practitioner. This is just a precautionary principle as the herbs can be safely used by anyone but as children's immune systems are still immature they recommend that you take the advice of a practitioner after a face-to-face meeting.
Is it okay to take herbal remedies if I'm about to have surgery?
Pukka advise stopping herbs 7 days before surgery to avoid any complications.
All of their formulas are safe to take for surgery, but due to the associated risk of affecting blood clotting they advise that they are avoided prior to surgery.
Can I drink your teas that have licorice in if I have high blood pressure?
Essentially, Yes. All problems ever associated with licorice have been from eating excessive licorice candy sweets. There is a consensus amongst experts that a safe level of licorice consumption for most people is at least 2.5g per day. The 'culprit' is considered to be one of licorice's compounds known as Glycyrrhizic acid (GA) that can cause renal sodium retention leading to increased blood pressure in some individuals. The 'safe' amount of 2.5g per day is arrived at by determining that consuming about 100mg/day of GA avoids any blood pressure effects. The typical GA content of licorice is in the range of about 4% for Glycyrrhiza glabra (European licorice). As the highest percentage of licorice in any of their teas is 25% (Licorice and Cinnamon tea) and the herbs in the teabag weigh a total of 2g, it means that you would have to take 5 cups a day of Licorice and Cinnamon tea to be near to consuming 2.5g of licorice a day and arriving at the 100mg threshold. All of their other teas have less licorice. Please see the information under "Are Pukka teas safe to drink during pregnancy" for more information regarding Licorice and Glycyrrhizic Acid consumption during pregnancy.

About Pukka Herbs
You never get a second chance to make a first impression, so when we started out we gave our name careful consideration. ‘Pukka’ was perfect.
Translated from Hindi to mean ‘authentic’, ‘genuine’ or, more colloquially, ‘top-quality’, ‘Pukka’ epitomises all that we represent – our ethos, ambition and everything we create.
Started with little finance, but plenty of passion, we’ve grown Pukka on our beliefs in Ayurveda – the ancient Indian art of living wisely – and the incredible health benefits of organic herbs.
At the centre of Pukka are our founders – Tim Westwell and Sebastian Pole – who were brought together by a mutual interest in promoting wellbeing. Sebastian was a qualified practitioner in Ayurveda and Chinese and Western herbal medicine and an avid herb grower. He loved herbal teas and realised that there was a gap in the market for high quality and delicious teas, but he needed a partner with some green-business acumen. And he came along in 2002 when Tim placed an advert in a local paper asking, ‘Do you want to grow business in a healthy way?’ and Sebastian was the only person to reply. The rest, as they say, is history.
For the first year, Pukka grew slowly and steadily from Tim’s spare bedroom on the outskirts of Bristol. It wasn’t long before interest grew, and now, nine years later, we have over 30 members of staff and continue to develop. Needless to say, we’ve moved out of the spare room!
As we grow, our reliance on nature increases. With this in mind, we respect our relationship with the land by using herbs from organic and sustainable sources, enjoying long-term and fair-trade bonds with our suppliers. We are proud to say that all our herbs and products are certified organic by the Soil Association and the USDA and can all be traced back to the field in which they were grown. We make regular visits to the farmers we work with to learn from as well as educate them. Like all relationships, it’s a two-way thing.
The old saying ‘mighty oaks from acorns grow’, suits the way in which we’ve developed over the years. Two people’s passion has grown into a company with award-winning organic herbal teas and food supplements that make a positive difference to people’s lives.
Throughout our journey, the huge support we’ve received from our customers has encouraged us to stay true to our roots and vision. We’re still as passionate about sharing the wonders of organic herbs as we were when the seeds of Pukka were first sown.
That passion just gets stronger with time.
We hope you’ll continue to enjoy your Pukka experience just as much as we do.
With warm wishes

This is an excellent ginger tea! I have just begun drinking Pukka Herbal Teas and find them to meet and exceed all my expectations. With other teas I often find I am still thirsty and have an off taste in my mounth after drinking them. With this tea there is none of that. Very satisfying!
