About Sun Cups
Sun Cups' desire for nut-free and gluten-free food started at home. Among the three of them (Rick, David and Neil) they are either sensitive to gluten and nuts or have family members with allergies. To make sure they can eat everything they create, they have established a 100% nut- and gluten-free manufacturing shop, and their entire supply chain is completely nut- and gluten-free. The chocolate manufacturer who grinds and blends their chocolate doesn't allow any nuts in the same building as their chocolate. Their employees can't bring peanut butter sandwiches to work, and they have "inside shoes" so nothing gets tracked into the shop. (It keeps the floors cleaner, too!) They test for peanut allergens in their batches of incoming ingredients using lateral flow test kits. The seeds for their sunflower butter are grown in the upper Midwest, where it's too cold to support peanuts, so they can't volunteer in the fields.

Tasting great wasn't enough for Sun Cups. Living and working in Boulder, they tend to be pretty adamant about sustainability. Every ingredient in Sun Cups is organic, so they don't add chemicals and pesticides to their environment. They pay a fair trade premium on the cacao beans used to make their chocolate, and all their cacao comes from Rainforest Alliance Certified farms, helping to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods for the farmers and families growing their beans.

Sun Cups packaging is pretty special, too. The packaging film they use to make their wrappers is entirely home-compostable, and is made from sustainably grown eucalyptus cellulose, not from corn or other food stocks. The film is certified for compostability to the requirements of ASTM D 6400 and also Vinçotte OK Compost Home. Even the shiny metallic inner layer, an ultra-thin deposit of aluminum, turns into inert, non-toxic aluminum oxide when composted. There's no wax or plastic in the paper chocolate cups they use. The cardboard tray that protects the Sun Cups is just paper coated with natural clay. The Sun Cup boxes you see on store shelves have been made with 100% wind power.
