Biotics Research Phosphatidylserine is a supplemental source of this important phospholipid which is a structural part of biologic membranes. Phosphatidylserine is involved in signal transduction activity, and may positively impact cognition.
Phosphatidylserine, a naturally occurring phospholipid nutrient, is a component of cell membranes. As such it serves as an essential constituent to the functioning of all cells in the body. In addition to its primary role as a structural component of cell membranes, it also plays a significant role in the biological processes of apoptosis and cell signaling. In most cells phosphatidylserine is restricted to the inner leaflet of the plasma membrane; however it appears on the surface of apoptotic lymphocytes at the initiation of phagocytosis by activated macrophages, and is believed to be a recognition signal for the phagocytic removal of apoptotic cells. The cell surface exposure of phosphatidylserine also occurs in coordination with other cellular functions, for example in platelet initiation of the blood clotting cascade, as well as in sperm maturation.
Phosphatidylserine comprises only a small percentage of the total phospholipids, accounting for less than 10% of the phospholipid total. However, as a component of myelin it makes up a major part of the phospholipid concentration of the brain, and as such may offer a supportive aspect in regard to brain function. It is also present in high concentrations in the retina, and is thought to play an important role in both vision and the nervous system.
Functionally, phosphatidylserine serves as an essential cofactor for the binding and activation of protein kinase C, a key enzyme in signal transduction, as well as a required component for the activity of other essential enzymes, including Na+/K+ ATPase and neutral sphingomyelinase. In blood coagulation, it is transported to the membrane surface, where it serves to enhance the activation of prothrombin to thrombin. Its importance in apoptosis is demonstrated by the fact that in its absence, the ingestion and clearing of apoptotic cells does not occur. Additionally, Bleijerveld OB, et al. have hypothesized its essentiality in mitochondrial functioning as a component in the phosphatidylserine decarboxylation pathway.
Due to the ability of phosphatidylserine to be converted into key lipid secondary messengers, it participates in important cellular regulatory mechanisms. In platelets the translocation of phosphatidylserine from the inner to the outer leaflet of the plasma membrane marks the initiation of the blood-clotting cascade, thus implicating its importance in this function. The exposure of phosphatidylserine on the cell surface, a characteristic of dying cells, allows for the safe clearance of apoptotic waste without induction of the inflammatory cascade. A defect in this clearance mechanism has been associated with autoimmune pathologies. Cumulatively, phosphatidylserine plays a key role in many biochemical and physiological processes in mammalian cells, including immunity.
Biotics Research Corporation’s Phosphatidylserine is supplied in 100 mg softgel caplets. As with all products from Biotics Research Corporation, the product it tested to ensure quality and purity.

Quality Control - What Sets Biotics Apart
The Biotics Research way!
At Biotics Research Corporation, we manufacture our own branded products on site, in our own state of the art facilities, allowing for complete control of the entire manufacturing process. In our on-site laboratories, the highly skilled members of our Quality Control Unit, utilize modern, sophisticated technologies and validated analytical methods to test incoming raw materials, monitor manufacturing processes, perform in- process testing, and test all finished products prior to their release for shipment. In fact, many aspects of our cGMPs (current Good Manufacturing Practices) exceed the new, recently enacted FDA guidelines for dietary supplements in order to ensure the safety and effectiveness of our products. The Quality Control Unit (QCU) has the authority to approve and/or reject all specifications and procedures associated with the production and release of all raw materials, packaging materials and finished products, including test methods and results, instrument calibrations, and processing records. The QCU conducts all internal audits, and validates and audits all raw material and packaging suppliers and service vendors as well.
All incoming raw materials are subject to appropriate testing prior to their release for production. Tests conducted include identity, potency, biological activity, microbiological, including bacteria, yeast and mold (including aflatoxins) and heavy metals (arsenic, cadmium, lead & mercury). Retained samples are maintained of all raw materials and finished products for future testing requirements (raw material stability and finished product expiration date verification).
All bulk finished products (tablets & capsules) are inspected and subjected to metal detection prior to being sampled by QC. They are then subject to appropriate disintegration and/or dissolution testing, and potency testing prior to being released to packaging. All liquid and powder products are tested for potency prior to packaging as well. Finally, microbiological testing is performed on all finished products and document reconciliation is completed prior to being released for shipment.
All testing is performed by our trained QC personnel using state of the art laboratory instrumentation including High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC), ICP, Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometry (AA), gel electrophoresis, FT -IR, Ultra Violet spectrophotometry, Thin Layer chromatography and Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry (GC- MS).
Unlike many companies that are struggling to meet the new GMP requirements established by the FDA, companies that are being regulated into implementing quality programs, extensive Quality Control has always been part of the corporate fabric of Biotics Research Corporation.
From day one, the mantra of Biotics Research Corporation has been “Innovation and Quality.” Our goals remain unchanged – utilize innovative ideas and carefully researched concepts with advanced techniques to develop products of superior quality and effectiveness – bringing you “The Best of Science and Nature”.
