What is whey?
Whey is the liquid component of cow’s milk, which is separated from the solid component, curd, in the cheese-making process. Natural whey contains water, protein, fat, minerals, and lactose. Whey protein products are produced when the protein elements in whey are separated through special filtering processes or by ion exchange. The filtration process removes the lactose and fat and leaves a highly concentrated protein that is dried into a highly functional protein powder. Ion exchange isolates the protein from the lactose and fat due to its electrical charge. The two main types of whey protein on the market are whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate. Whey protein concentrate protein ranges from 19-89%, typically 80%, and whey isolate contains at least 90% protein. Whey protein is a high quality, complete protein and contains all nine essential amino acids, the building blocks of healthy muscles, skin, nails and other body tissues.
What makes whey protein different from other forms of protein?
Scientists have various methods of measuring protein quality. Biological Value (BV) is a measure of a particular protein’s effect on nitrogen balance (the more positive the better). The protein digestibility corrected amino acid score (PDCAAS) is a measure of how well a particular protein supplies the nine essential amino acids (the more completely the better). Whey protein digestibility corrected amino acid score is 1.14, as compared to 0.94 for beef protein, and its BV is 104, compared to 100 for eggs. In addition, whey protein empties from the stomach and is absorbed into the bloodstream from the intestine faster than other proteins. Due to whey’s quick digestion it has been called the ‘fast protein’ and is the preferred protein to flood the body with amino acids so muscles can begin to recover quicker. Moreover, whey protein contains especially high concentrations of the branched chain amino acids that are metabolized at high rates during exercise—most notably valine, isoleucine and leucine.
Is milk the same as whey?
No. While both are natural dairy products, milk contains ~3.3% protein that is comprised of 80% casein protein and 20% whey protein. In addition, milk contains lactose and fat (removed in skim milk). Whey protein is extracted from milk, leaving the lesser protein--casein--and eliminating most of the lactose and fat.
Does DESIGNER WHEY protein powder contain whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate?

Can I use DESIGNER WHEY if I am lactose intolerant?
Designer Whey protein products contain extremely low levels of lactose (less than 3%)--much lower than the levels reported to cause discomfort in people with lactose intolerance. A small number of people are allergic to milk proteins. The majority of these individuals are allergic to casein. DESIGNER WHEY does not contain any casein. However, some individuals may also be allergic to other milk proteins, such as lactoglobulin. Whey contains lacatoglobulin, so there is a very small chance of an allergic reaction to whey.

Do any DESIGNER WHEY products contain gluten?
All DESIGNER WHEY Powders, regardless of flavor, are gluten free. DESIGNER WHEY is a pure whey protein derived from cow's milk, and does not contain any traces of gluten, wheat, corn, rye, or any other grain. There is no possibility of cross contamination as the manufacturing facility they use does not mix or bottle any products that contain any form of grains. What are the sweeteners used in the DESIGNER WHEY products?
All DESIGNER WHEY products are aspartame-free. Instead of aspartame, DESIGNER WHEY products use preferred non-nutritive sweeteners Acesulfame-K, Sucralose, and/or Stevia. Acesulfame-K or Sunett ™ brand sweetener is a calorie-free sweetener that boasts intensive sweetening power (about 200 times sweeter than sugar), high purity and proven safety. Since it is not metabolized by the human body, it passes through the digestive system unchanged.
Sucralose is a non-nutritive sweetener manufactured from regular table sugar (sucrose). Used as a zero-calorie sweetener and flavor enhancer, Sucralose is made by a patented process that makes Sucralose extremely sweet--about 600 times sweeter than sugar--and extremely stable. Sucralose is so stable that, unlike other non-nutritive sweeteners such as aspartame, it will not break down or lose its sweetness when used in cooking or baking (see our recipe section for ideas on cooking or baking with DESIGNER WHEY!). Sucralose is also not metabolized (broken down) by the body's food-digesting enzymes. This means that Sucralose has no calories!
Why is there cholesterol in whey protein?
Since the DESIGNER WHEY Proteins are predominately animal-sourced, they contain a small quantity of naturally occurring dietary cholesterol. Cholesterol is a fatty substance and is necessary for the synthesis of sex hormones, bile acids, and Vitamin D and forms the structure of every cell in your body. Consequently, cholesterol is essential to life. Furthermore, research suggests that saturated fats are twice as powerful in raising blood cholesterol levels as polyunsaturated fats are in lowering them, while dietary cholesterol has a smaller effect on blood cholesterol levels.
Whey protein has been shown to lower cholesterol levels in a number of animal and human clinical studies. Certain bioactive components in whey protein may be responsible for the cholesterol reduction; however, additional research is needed in this area.

Can too much protein hurt my kidneys?
