Agents that improve mental performance in the healthy young are practically unknown. Well-controlled trials demonstrate GPC can benefit this population. The drug scopolamine depletes the brain's acetylcholine stores, causing a transistory cognitive impairment similar to those observes in normal aging. This "scopolamine amnesia" is a useful experimental model of memory loss. In the first two double-blind trials, young healthy men and women were started on either a placebo or GPC, then treated with scopolamine or a placebo. GPC significantly improved word recall and attention capacity, and even improved baseline word recall. In the second double-blind trial, subjects were pretreated with GPC, idebenone, or aniracetam. GPC pretreatment significantly protected learning and long-term verbal memory, and performed superior to idebenone and aniracetam. GPC Enhances Mental Processing at Middle Age
Various physiologic tests indicate GPC improves mental performance at middle age. In a double-blind trial on over-50 subjects with AAMI (age-associated memory impairment), GPC improved the slow wave ("delta") EEG (ElectroEncephaloGraphic) activity. In controlled trials with subjects aged up to 65 years, GPC improved a number of mental provessing measures, including reaction time, which is an indicator for age-related cognitive dysfunction. In a trial with middle-aged male outpatients manifesting severe memory problems, GPC benefited overall clinical status, psychometric performance, and central reaction times, and compared against the drug oxiracetam showed longer-lasting benefit. Visual evoked potential (VEP) is another physiologic response linked to cognitive performance. In subjects aged 59-83 with impaired brain circulation, GPC increased VEP amplitude. Also, in healthy subjects GPC enhanced cerebral glucose utilization, suggesting it increases energy production in the brain.

In 2001, noted researcher Lucilla Parnetti published a meta-analysis of the data from 10 GPC clinical trials that included 1,570 patients with severe cognitive decline. In all 4 trials GPC was given intramuscularly at 1,000 mg/day for the first month, then orally, 1200 mg/day for 5 months. GPC helped more than 95 percent of the patients. During the first month GPC significantly accelerated recovery from focal neurological deficits, including space-time orientation, degree of consciousness, language, motor capacity, and general wellbeing. The subsequent oral phase of GPC consolidated the improvements. Parnetti together with other investigators concluded GPC offered unique benefits against acute cerebrovascular damage.
