About the heart:
The heart, which normally beats about 100,000 times every day, is the primary organ of the circulatory system and is responsible for pumping blood throughout the entire body. The cardiovascular system transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, antibodies and waste.

Excess cholesterol, which takes years to accumulate, affects cardiovascular function. Here’s how:  Cholesterol is a natural substance produced by the body. It plays a key role in digestion and absorption of fats, oils and fat-soluble vitamins from food. Good cholesterol (called high-density lipoproteins) travels through the bloodstream to nourish cells.

Excess cholesterol in the body can be manufactured from dietary fats, saturated fats, refined sugars, carbohydrates and meats. In a healthy body, a moderate amount of excess cholesterol can be eliminated through the intestines or kept as fat reserve (triglycerides) in cells and stored for later use.  When too much cholesterol and fat accumulates in the blood, the body converts it into bad cholesterol or LDL (low-density lipoprotein), which form plaque in arteries that accumulate, making it increasingly difficult for blood to travel through. At certain points of accumulation, adverse cardiac events ensue.

Coenzyme Q10 is a fat-soluble nutrient that occurs naturally in the human body and is essential for helping to produce energy on the cellular level. The heart relies on CoQ10 to produce energy – the heart utilizes more cellular energy than any other organ. Clinical studies have revealed CoQ10 deficiencies in the heart tissues of people with heart problems. In addition, CoQ10 is a potent antioxidant that protects the body from free radicals that damage cells. As the body ages, its ability to naturally produce CoQ10 decreases.

Guggulipid/guggul is a purified extract from the Indian medicinal plant Commiophora mukul. Studies have shown that guggul can help significantly lower blood cholesterol and triglycerides. Guggul works in the liver by increasing the metabolism of low-density lipoproteins (bad cholesterol).

Hawthorne Extract has been used in traditional medicine for irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, chest pain, and other cardiovascular ailments. Studies have shown benefit with hawthorn to patients with heart failure, and in cases of angina. Hawthorne extract may be helpful in promoting healthy cholesterol levels and protecting against the buildup of cholesterol in the arteries. In clinical studies, the flavonoids in hawthorn extract were shown to decrease the constriction of coronary vessels which may enhance the smooth flow of blood into the arteries.

L-Carnitine is known to assist in fat metabolism. L-carnitine regulates fatty build up in the arteries by promoting healthy fat and cholesterol levels in the blood. L-carnitine has been used for the treatment of various forms of cardiovascular disease.

Taurine is found in heart muscle, and this amino acid has been shown to help regulate the heartbeat as well as control cholesterol levels in the blood.

Red Grape Skin- An excellent source of polyphenols (anthocyanins, leucoanthocyanins). Polyphenols form pigments of the deep red and blue in various fruits and wines. Studies have shown these polyphenols help promote cardiovascular health. Polyphenols in red grape skin protect the cardiovascular system and function as antioxidants. Their strong antioxidant properties inhibit oxidation of "bad" cholesterol called low-density lipoprotein (LDL). LDL may be largely responsible for the build-up of arterial plaque. Red grape skin polyhenols may exhibit stronger antioxidant activity in neutralizing free radicals in the body than beta-carotene, vitamin C and vitamin E
