Diatomaceous earth is a fine powder composed of the crushed fossilized exoskeletons of microscopic diatoms. This is a remarkable substance that is a desiccant--it actually dries out the waxy outer layer of fleas and ticks, causing them death by dehydration.
In tests performed by the USDA, as well as a number of consumer trials, diatomaceous earth has proven to be an effective non-chemical insect control. Food grade diatomaceous earth is also a wormer; mix it with the animals food and it will kill any worms or parasites.
The inspiration for the Lumino Pet product line comes from the experience of using Lumino Spa Origins skin and body care products on our own and other people's pets. They've had a number of customers using their body care products for their pets. These are spa quality treatments, created with natural and organic ingredients. They contain no toxic chemicals, synthetic preservatives, parabens, or petroleum by-products.
Lumino has made minor formula changes to ensure that all the ingredients used are absolutely safe for dogs, cats, birds, and horses. Many pet owners are turning to all-natural solutions rather than pharmaceutical drugs to deal with their pet's stress-related emotions and behavior.

Another name for this is Fossil Shell Flour by Permaguard. This is some good stuff! It will also pierce the exoskeleton of cockroaches, beetles, anything that crunches when you step on it.
Farmers mix it in with feed to deter pests and clumps.
It is NOT a chemical but more mechanical. If you look at in under a microscope it is very spiny. Also used in humans. 1tsp-1tbsp mixed in water as a daily drink will get rid of intestinal worms and detox heavy metals. Food grade is recommended for humans. Also sprinkle it in the garden and it will keep things from eating your leaves. May also kill bedbugs and potato bugs. You can sprinkle it on carpets. Dust your pets with it and their beds. Will kill the adult fleas but IGR (insect growth regulator) is needed to kill a bad infestation as it prevents eggs from hatching. I sprinkle it around the foundation of the house too so most bugs that walk through it are dehydrated. I would always keep this on hand for it's many uses!
This stuff does not work! I really wanted it to- for obvious reasons, but all it did was leave a fine dust all over my house and the fleas continued to play. I put it on my large labrador who has a flea problem to where I could see several fleas crawling at one time. I would estimate he had 1 flea per square inch of his body- he was infested. I used probably one cup of this product and worked it well into his coat. The fleas were unaffected.
Didn't see any difference using this.
This is in response to those who had negative reviews of this product. I am compelled to inform that this is not a poison therefore you must have patience in evaluating its efficacy. It does work if you give it a chance. There is no quick fix when dealing with fleas and other invasive pests. It takes time to work since it penetrates the exoskeleton of the pest so that it will dry out and die. This does not happen instantly. My mother-in-law had bed begs a few years ago, and after dealing with various exterminators (that did not help) she used diatomaceous earth and finally eradicated her infestation.
I bought it for flea prevention and it is not working.
