A natural gentle skin toner derived from a time honored Native-American formula. Now people with sensitive skin have an Alcohol-Free Cucumber Witch Hazel Toner, with a fresh, cooling, fragrance-free Natural Aromatic Cucumber Extract. Thayers developed this all-natural toner for healthy-looking skin, adding moisture while helping to protect the skin from airborne impurities, and as an alternative to drying astringents. Witch Hazel helps tighten pores, and to smooth and beautify the skin. Thayers proprietary Witch Hazel extract (derived from the bark) is not distilled, thereby maintaining all the beneficial natural tannins. Assay of hamamelitannin shows that Witch Hazel bark extract is 31 times richer in hamamelitannin than the leaf extract and 87 times richer than the stem extract. What is Witch Hazel?Witch Hazel (hamamelis virginiana) is found in damp, open woods and along stream banks from Nova Scotia east to Minnesota and south to Georgia. It is a deciduous spreading shrub or small tree with a smooth gray/brown bark. Its astringent properties are extracted from its bark, leaves and twigs. The natural astringent tannins reduce inflammation and stem bleeding. Native Peoples applied witch hazel poultices to ease swelling and ulcers. Herbalists consider witch hazel an excellent remedy for hemorrhoids and varicose veins, as well as cuts and bruises. Thayers has been producing Witch Hazel since the middle of the 1800's. In 1855, the American Institute of New York Awarded Thayers a silver medal for excellence in preparation of fluid extracts, and a year later, the Massachusetts Charitable Mechanics Association awarded the company for the apparatus to produce these extracts. The Pharmaceutical Era, a periodical, published an article November 15, 1890: "...Fluid extracts were first brought to the attention of medical and pharmaceutical professionals by Dr. Henry Thayer, who was the first to tell physicians what fluid extracts were"... Thayers added Aloe Vera to the soothing properties of Witch Hazel, nature's skin care. Thayers Original Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera Formula Astringent has been offered in bottles and in jars of moistened pads for decades. Over the past 15 years, Thayers has focused on bringing its Witch Hazel up to date to meet the current needs and preferences of the consumer. After adding Lemon Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera Formula Astringent and Cleanser, Medicated Superhazel with Aloe Vera Formula Astringent (for itches, rashes and burns), Peach Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera Formula Gentle Astringent with Vitamin C, Thayers revolutionized the world of Witch Hazel skin care in 1998 by creating the first Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel with Aloe Vera Formula Toners: Rose Petal with Vitamin E, Original for sensitive skin and the newest :" ":ers products have been traditionally sold in better health food stores and independent pharmacies. It is the oldest company in the United States natural products and health food store industry, having begun its journey in 1847. You can always trust Thayers.
About Thayers In 1847, Henry Thayer M.D., opened a laboratory on Main Street in Cambridge, Massachusetts to produce his newly developed line of herbal extracts for sale to the medical profession. Born in 1828, into one of Massachusetts' founding families, he was trained in the medical arts of his day by his physician father. His method produced, for the first time, standardized strengths, enabling physicians to regulate dosages accurately. The company, named Henry Thayer & Company, prospered and broadened its line of products and has been described as the largest manufacturer of pharmaceuticals in America at the time of the Civil War.
In 1875, the company published "Descriptive Catalogue of Fluid and Solid Extracts in Vacuo" listing over 800 of its products: herbal based, presented in the forms of tinctures, infusions, syrups, poultices and wines. Prominent among these products was a Fluid Extract of Witch Hazel, listed as a "Tonic, astringent, and sedative; useful in checking hemorrhages and excessive discharges." The final pages show sugar-coated pills, a physician's dose list, apothecary's tables, a diet for invalids, and some diagnosis-related formulas including numerous combinations for cough remedies, a "Lotion for Humors and Eruptions", "Hair Restorative", and "Effervescent Lemonade Without a Machine."
After Dr. Thayer died in 1902, ownership of the business passed to his great niece, Mrs. Joseph Sturdevant. The nature of the business changed from emphasis on extracts of herbs to the preparation and sale of compound formulas marketed to the public through drug stores as "patent" medicines. Included were a line of 9 children's remedies, marketed under the brand name "Tots", a pile ointment, and a line of lozenges, including Slippery Elm Lozenges.
In 1947, Chase, Storrow Co. of Boston, a partnership of former Harvard roommates and recent Navy veterans, bought the company from Mrs. Joseph Sturdevant. A vigorous program of sales and advertising was begun based on a strategy of first increasing sales in New England, to be followed by expansion west of the Hudson River. The next decade saw distribution of the lozenges in the U.S. and Canada in independent drug stores and natural product stores, and the addition of related items, Cough Syrup, Nose Drops, Cold Sore Balm, and Coughmasters™. In 1989, the decision was made to add a line of Witch Hazel products for sale in the health food trade, with the addition of Aloe Vera to not only soothe and clean skin but soften as well.
In 1999 the company was sold to Karen Clarke, who for five years had served as General Manager. The Thayers family-business tradition was carried forward yet again in 2003, when Karen's son, John Gehr, came aboard as Vice President of Sales & Marketing and Business Development.
A longstanding commitment to making effective, natural remedies with high-quality ingredients has ensured Thayers' longevity. Its owners are confident that with this unwavering dedication, the company will flourish throughout the 21st Century.

Thayers alcohol-free witch hazel toner is one of the best and most economical toner that I've ever used. It does a good job of restoring the skin's pH level and removing oil, makeup, and dirt. Unlike other toners that contain alcohol or ethanol, this toner is relatively non-toxic and is a good toner for all skin types.
Usually, I add around 3 oz of apple cider vinegar to the toner to increase it's skin exfoliating properties.
