As of April 2010, Adora Calcium Supplements have a new formula and a bold new look. But, the rich, creamy chocolate that fans have come to love has stayed the same. The new Adora Calcium is based on bone health research and consumer input to include:More Vitamin D
Recent reports indicate that vitamin D is not only essential for calcium absorption, but also key in helping immunity and preventing disease. The new Adora Calcium includes 250 IU of D3, the most active form of the nutrient.
A Boost of Magnesium
An often overlooked nutrient for bone health, magnesium is rarely found in other chewable products because it is such a large mineral. The new Adora Calcium includes 40 mg of magnesium to assist with calcium absorption without impacting size or taste.
No Vitamin K
Consumers who are on blood thinning medication must avoid vitamin K. As such, many consumers and physicians requested that we remove that vitamin from our product.

Ways to Get Your Calcium
Not all foods are created equal. And not everyone likes to eat broccoli or can digest dairy products. According to the National Osteoporosis Foundation, you'd need to eat the quantities of the foods below to obtain 1,000mg of calcium, the equivalent of 2 Adora™ Calcium Supplements in rich, premium, all-natural chocolate. These indulgent chocolate disks - at only 30 calories each - provide 100% of the daily value of calcium plus vitamin D3 and magnesium for optimal absorption and should be enjoyed at different times after meals. Adora™ is also gluten-free. Which would you crave?
What kind of calcium and how much does Adora contain?
Adora Calcium Supplements are made from calcium carbonate that is highly-purified, meets USP standards, and is tested to ensure it is free of heavy metals. Each disk contains 500 mg of elemental calcium – that is the actual amount of the mineral in every Adora Calcium supplement. And, since the average person can absorb approximately 500 mg of calcium at one time, 1 disk is considered the ideal serving size.
Adora chose calcium carbonate because it contains the highest percentage of elemental calcium (40%). This means Adora can get more actual calcium into each disk than if they were to use calcium citrate which only contains 20% calcium.
What kind of vitamin D is used in Adora Calcium?
The vitamin D in Adora Calcium is D3 (cholecalciferol). Adora switched to this form of the vitamin due to consumer requests. [Adora previously included D2 from yeast.] The Vitamin D3 is derived from lanolin that is harvested from the wool of healthy living sheep that are not harmed in the process. D3 is considered to be the more “active” form of the vitamin. In fact, D3 is what the body makes in response to sun exposure. There are 250 IU of vitamin D3 in every Adora Calcium disk.
Do Adora Calcium Supplements contain magnesium?
Yes. In response to consumer demand our new formula includes 40 mg of magnesium from magnesium oxide. We chose that form of the mineral because it enabled us to get the most magnesium per disk. Each Adora Calcium disk provides the same amount of magnesium as half a cup of brown rice. However, Adora still encourage consumers to get additional magnesium through a varied diet that includes plenty of unprocessed foods such as whole grains, leafy greens, legumes, nuts, and fish.
I’m watching my weight; can I still eat Adora Calcium?
Yes. Despite the fact that Adora Calcium Supplements are made from rich, delicious chocolate, they are portion-controlled and ideal for anyone who is counting calories. Each Adora Calcium disk is only 30 calories (1 Weight Watchers point) and includes 500 mg of calcium. If you tried to get that much calcium from food you would consume far greater calories. For example, to get 500 mg of calcium from 1% milk you have to consume approximately 170 calories. In addition, people who are watching their calories often consume too little calcium, so supplementation is important.
I have lactose intolerance; can I take Adora Calcium?
Yes. Adora Calcium in Dark Chocolate does not contain milk as an ingredient and is therefore suitable for most individuals with lactose intolerance. In fact, we have had consumers tell us that they love the product because their lactose intolerance had previously made it very difficult to get enough calcium. For more information, please visit the Nutrition page. PLEASE NOTE: Adora Calcium in Dark Chocolate is made alongside Adora Calcium in Milk Chocolate; as a result the product contains traces of milk. Those individuals with severe milk allergies should not consume this product.
I have celiac disease (gluten intolerance); can I take Adora Calcium?
Yes. As you probably know, gluten is found in grains that include wheat, rye, barley and some oats. None of those ingredients are found in Adora Calcium Supplements. In addition, testing has shown that Adora Calcium contains less than 3 ppm of gluten (less than 10 ppm is generally considered to be “gluten free”, and there is no test for the complete absence of gluten).
How much caffeine is in each Adora Calcium Supplement?
Excess caffeine consumption can cause calcium to be excreted in your urine, so this is a very good question. Although chocolate does naturally contain caffeine, the amount of caffeine present in an Adora Calcium disk (a 7 gram serving) is very tiny. Specifically, an Adora Calcium disk in Dark Chocolate contains 5 mg of caffeine, while an Adora Calcium disk in Milk Chocolate contains just 2 mg of caffeine. For reference, decaf coffee typically contains 2 mg of caffeine.
Is it O.K. to eat chocolate with calcium?
Yes. Although chocolate contains oxalic acid (a chemical that binds calcium in many plants, such as spinach), Adora Calcium Supplements in chocolate contain far more calcium than oxalic acid which insures that each disk has 500 mg of absorbable calcium. Furthermore, the natural fat (from cocoa butter) in the chocolate actually helps promote absorption of the vitamin D (fat-soluble vitamin), while the vitamin D helps promote absorption of the calcium.
The secret Adora™ formula that has us craving calcium nationwide was developed by Thompson Brands, a chocolatier with a rich, celebrated heritage since 1879. We can all thank William Thompson, one of the earliest innovators in the American chocolate industry, for Adora's great taste. He founded W.H. Thompson Confectionary in Meriden, Connecticut over 133 years ago and, to this day, the company continues to be a manufacturer based entirely in the United States. From the intricately foil-wrapped chocolate bunnies that are a must-have on Easter morning, to the chocolate cigars that announce a baby's joyous arrival, his chocolates have had the ability to make any occasion sweeter.
After over a century of perfecting the art of chocolate moulding, the team at Thompson Brands believed chocolate offered more than just great taste. Enter Adora™ - and the idea of craving your calcium! Adora Calcium Supplements were introduced to the world in 2006 in all-natural, premium milk and dark chocolate, and designed so that two delicious disks a day provide 100% of the Daily Value of calcium plus the addition of vitamin D3 for improved bone health and magnesium for optimal absorption. And, the proof is in the chocolate - as recent studies continue to report, adequate calcium and vitamin D throughout life, as part of a well-balanced diet, may reduce the risk of osteoporosis.
Adora's Quality Assurance team oversees all steps in the process and ensures each bag of Adora™ Calcium Supplement is in compliance with FDA standards for dietary supplements standards. In addition, their facility is inspected annually for food safety by a third-party auditor. The high quality calcium carbonate, vitamin D3, and magnesium all meet United States Pharmacopeia (USP) standards and their chocolate is made with simple, all-natural ingredients that adhere to strict standards of quality.
Bone Health for a Lifetime
Osteoporosis may be preventable through proper intake of calcium, vitamin D, and exercise throughout life. Select a circle that you most closely identify with to view how Adora™ Calcium Supplement can help at different life stages.
Children & Teens - We often think of our grandparents as having brittle bones, but what most of us don't realize is that 85% of adult bone mass is acquired by age 18 in girls and age 20 in boys - and the majority (60-85%) fail to get the recommended 1,300mg of calcium per day. Teens who smoke or drink soda, caffeinated beverages, or alcohol may get even less calcium because those substances interfere with the way the body absorbs calcium.
Adult - Calcium intake = bone health. Plain and simple. Most adults know this, but still the majority don't get enough calcium rich foods. Lifestyle choices also matter. Maintaining a calcium and vitamin D rich diet and increasing bone mass through weight bearing exercise are key to reducing the risk of bone fractures. Like gray hairs and wrinkles, bone health becomes a daily battle against a ticking clock as calcium absorption decreases to 15%-20% in adulthood, and continues to decrease as people age.
Pregnant - Meal for two, please! A growing baby's nutrition is dependent upon mom's diet and mom's diet needs to be fortified with extra nutrients to compensate for the vitamins and minerals her baby uses to grow. Calcium requirements are actually higher during pregnancy and breastfeeding - 1000-1300mg (varies according to age) per day. If mom fails to meet this level, her body will make up for the loss by providing calcium to the baby from her own bones.
Mature - As we age, reduced hormone production causes a slew of unwanted side effects. Accelerated bone loss is one of them, which increases the risk of bone fractures. During menopause, bone mass decreases 3%-5% per year. Be aware that osteoporosis affects the hip, spine and wrist first. A hip fracture is often life threatening in elderly women - it's equal to the combined risk of breast, uterine and ovarian cancer.
Take one disk up to three times per day, preferably with meals, or as recommended by your doctor. Though you may be tempted with Adora Calcium, please handle as a dietary supplement. Daily intake of calcium above 2500 mg is not advised.
Ask your doctor before use if you are taking blood thinning medicine (anticoagulants).
Allergen Information: Adora Calcium Supplements contain milk. Although Adora Calcium in Dark Chocolate does not have milk as an ingredient, since it is made on the same equipment as Adora Calcium in Milk Chocolate, it contains traces of milk. Those individuals with severe milk allergies should not consume Adora Calcium Supplements. Likewise, Adora Calcium Supplements are made in a facility that processes tree nuts, so individuals with severe nut allergies should be cautious.
