FAQ
Kirk's Bar Soap
What are the ingredients in Kirk's bar soap? Coconut Oil, Soap of Coconut, Vegetable Glycerin and Water. Kirk's bar is made by a centuries-old, time honored process by mixing coconut oil with caustic soda. Caustic soda is made from sea salt. Coconut oil is thus converted to coconut soap, which is technically called sodium cocoate. During the process of making coconut soap, glycerin is also produced since glycerin is a part of natural coconut oil. This glycerin is left in Kirk's soap to give moisturization properties and make it less harsh to skin compared to other commercial soaps in which this natural glycerin is removed by a chemical separation process. Kirk's soap is the most natural process soap made in the USA today.
What kind of fragrance does Kirk's use in their soap? Kirk's fragrance is a special blend of mostly natural and some synthetic materials. Synthetic materials have been tested for product safety by manufacturer and approved by FDA.
Do they use any lye in the soap? Yes, lye (made from sea salt) is used to convert coconut oil into soap. The soap has been made by this old process since biblical times. However, Kirk's soap contains no free lye or lye residues in it. All traces of residual lye are fully neutralized in our soap-making process.
If the fragrance is synthetic, why does the label say all natural? Because 99% plus ingredients are natural and fragrance is mostly derived from natural materials.
Even if the fragrance used is considered as masked fragrance, what is the guarantee that it would not cause any allergies? The ingredients of most modern-day fragrances are tested for allergic reactions. Only the materials which pass this test are used in fragrance blending.
How long would a bar soap last with an average usage? About a month or about 20 long showers. It depends on the usage though.
What is the shelf life of Kirk's bar soap? Kirk's bar has an unlimited shelf life. The bar is still usable even if it has discolored after a very long storage period.
Can Kirk's be used for enema? Kirk's bar can be used for enema. However, all soap products may cause some irritation if used for enema, so this should not be practiced too frequently. We would recommend to consult your doctor before you use Kirk's for enema.
What is Kirk's pH? 9.6 in 1% solution water.
Is Kirk's Kosher? Although Kirk's doesn't carry the "circle U" symbol for kosher products, it is animal free. There has not been sufficient consumer interest to warrant seeking Kosher certification, which entitles the traditional rabbinical code of manufacturing (regular inspection by a rabbi, etc.)
What does Castile mean? Today, Castile refers to soaps made without animal fats.
Is Kirk's biodegradable? Kirk's is completely biodegradable. All surfactants used in Kirk's are biodegradable. This means all surfactants (sudsing/cleaning agents) are broken down into simpler compounds by natural biological action helping to eliminate sudsing/foaming problems in lakes and streams.
What are the health effects of Kirk's soap?
- Eye: The product is mild enough that no damage or irritation should occur. In the event that irritation does occur, warm water poured over the bridge of the nose for a couple of minutes should be enough. If symptoms persist, a doctor should be consulted.
- Ingestion: The product is not poisonous. If a large quantity is ingested, it may cause vomiting. In the occasion that this happens, dilute it with fluids, such as milk, water, or juice.
- Skin: The product contains no irritations or allergens. An adverse reaction, while unusual is most likely due to individual allergies.
Kirk's Liquid Products
How long would the various Kirk's Liquid Products last with average usage?
These are estimates and personal usage may vary:
-
Kirk's Liquid Soap: One ounce should provide about 20 hand washings. That's over 300 hand washings per 16 oz. bottle.
-
Kirk's Body Wash: One ounce should give you 10-15+ long showers or 160-240+ long, luxurious showers per 16 oz. bottle.
-
Kirk's Shampoo: One ounce should be sufficient for 10-15+ shampooings or 160-240+ shampoos per 16 oz. bottle.
-
Kirk's Conditioner: One ounce should provide about 8+ conditionings or 125+ uses per 16 oz. bottle.
What is the shelf life of Kirk's Liquid Products? The liquid products have a shelf life of 5 years.
If there are synthetic ingredients in Kirk's Liquid Products, why do you claim these products are all natural? The synthetic materials (preservatives and a portion of fragrance) are present in trace amounts. Kirk's Liquid Products are 99%+ natural.
Can Kirk's Liquid Soap be used as a dishwashing liquid? Many customers do use Kirk's Liquid Soap as a dishwashing liquid. There are no harmful ingredients in it and it does leave your dishes sparkling clean while being extremely mild on your hands. It can also be used for hand-washables.
160 years of Kirk's Coco Hardwater Castile In 1839, Kirk's Coco Hardwater Castile was first introduced by the James S. Kirk Company in Utica, New York. Twenty years later, in 1859 Kirk's moved to Chicago where it quickly gained national attention. Proctor & Gamble purchased Kirk's in 1930 and moved it to Cincinnati. Kirk's moved back to Chicago in 1996 when it was acquired by Kirk's Natural Products Corp. Finally, in 2005, Kirk's Natural returned to the Cincinnati Area.
Since Kirk's is a classic brand of soap, they can afford to give affordable prices to their customers. I have bought this soap for at least 12 years, initially via my Grocery Stores, then by the case yearly. This soap has helped my completion and is the greatest!
-
I ordered these by mistake instead of the fragrance ones. But I ended up liking these a lot. I ordered a dozen. Can't beat the price anywhere for sure. Very happy with my first purchase. Excellent packaging and quick shipping.
-
I love this stuff. Much cheap than Dr. Bronner's. I appreciate that it's not tested on animals and contains no animal ingredients. I grate it up and use it as laundry soap (along with baking soda and borax powder) -- works just as well as any laundry detergent I've found. Great price!
-
I wanted to wait and test this soap out completely, and it is exactly as the other users have stated, It's wonderful I intend to purchase twice the amount that I previously purchased. I am happy!
-
This soap is great - it lathers wonderfully, leaves the skin clean but moisturized, is very mild and non-irritating (you can even shave with it), the bar holds its form for a really long time, and the price is right!
-
I'm sensitive to smells and this soap is just shy of perfect, but the vague coco smell is not bothersome. The lather is rich and the bar is dense so it last well. I received a "regular" fragrance bar by mistake once and tossed it in the trash - it was stinky.
-
Excellent for my skin with eczema!
-
Has a slight annoying smell. The soap is OK but I wouldn't buy it again
-
This is the classic soap bar.
-
This is a great bar of soap especially for shaving! It beats buying shaving cream and it moisturizes your body too!
-
Good product. It leaves my skin feeling nice, and not dry. It does seem to disappear fast, though.. so I give it an average rating.

-
Works great, lasts long and has no fragrance
-
Very clean feeling soap, very little scent
-
I usually buy the Kirk's Coconut Soap but noticed this Fragrance Free soap and have been very pleased with the fore mentioned soap so thought I'd try it out. I DON'T LIKE IT! Sure, it lathers great in hard water, but I'm a guy. I shave my head and face with soap because I don't like animal based gels. This soap dries out my skin and leaves a film that the coconut soap didn't. When I use it just for washing my hands my hands are all dried out and almost peeling appearance. I really wanted to like this product but I tried 3 bars thinking maybe one bar was misblended or something. I'm returning to the Coconut Soap.
-
foams very well, last long and truly fragrance free. My kids even like it for the foam so we use it as the family bath bar
-
First time that I ordered from luckyvitamin.com. Price of item was competitive (best price I could find) and the ordering process couldn't have gone smoother. Shipping was fast and the order arrived as described on website. Thanks!
-
Product is normally a hard to find product in my area. Your prices are cheaper, even with shipping and readily available !!
-
The product is a wonderful, safe ingredient for homemade laundry detergent .. no worries about harmful chemicals!
-
Never had any soap lather up like this. Husband (who has dry skin) loves it & wants more!
-
smells great, feels clean
-
Good soap. Doesn't last as long as Grandpa's Soaps, though. (and Grampa's even weigh less!)
-
-
Been using this product for over a year. Been very happy with it for washing hands and bathing. Seems to last a long time if you use a soap saver (as long as another leading brand of castile. Really like the lack of fragrance. Doesn't seem to dry skin as much as regular (non-castile) soap does.
-
Great, natural soap. Everyone in the family uses this.
-
Basic and simple. Some things are the best this way.
-
Doesn't leave a film like some soap. Excellent ingredients. Gentle for the kids.
-
Kirk's fragrance free soap is as good as it gets - mild for skin and made from an old fashioned formula that has been excellent for years.
-
Fantastic! I use this in my laundry soap, and it works great!
-
This soap suds well, smells lovely and is a great price.
-
I use this as a soap for shaving my legs, and it beats any soap I've tried that's specifically designed to be a shaving soap, and the price too. While shaving can irritate my skin, this seems to help minimise that, if not have that condition completely disappear.
-
Kirk's Castile soap is excellent it is very gentile on my skin and has a double use as a bar soap for washing cloths. Great for use while traveling to hand wash small items and gentle on your skin.
-
Natural ingredients, no perfumy smell.
-
I actually like this product a lot. I have a question though about what constitutes its first ingredient, "coconut soap". I wrote Kirk's twice about this but they never responded. That always makes me wonder if someone has something to hide.
-
This beats Kroger prices & availability!
