    Medical Studies Done

    Botanical Name: Polygonum Multiflorum
Ho shou wu is widely used in China for the traditional purpose of restoring hair and other signs of youth. The treatment of alopecia has been investigated. The treatments often contain hoshou-wu.  According to the English-Chinese Encyclopedia of Practical Traditional Chinese Medicine, "alopecia is mostly caused by deficiency of liver and kidney with subsequent failure of [blood to go up and nourish] the hair. The hair pores are open when the hair is poorly nourished, and wind invades the pores on the occasion. Therefore, deficient blood with wind [invasion] leads to hair loss. However, stagnation of liver qi and impaired qi mechanism will also
result in hair loss because of the malnutrition of hair due to stagnation of qi and stasis of blood."

Botanical Name:  Eclipta Prostrata syn.: eclipta alba
This Ayurvedic herb is found throughout India as well as the southwestern part of the United States.  This is the main herb for the hair and cirrhosis in Ayurvedic medicine.  It is believed to prevent aging, maintain and rejuvenate hair, teeth, bones, memory, sight, and hearing.  It is a rejuvenative for pitta, kidneys, and liver. The root powder is used in Ayurvedic medicine for hepatitis, enlarged spleen, and skin disorders.

    Botanical Name: Poria Cocos
A widely used and important herb in Chinese pharmacopoeia. This herb has been used in TCM for lowering blood sugar and controlling stomach acids. Poria has anti-emetic activity, anticarcinogenesis, anti-edema effect, and prevents toxicity. These medicinal activities may be related to its immune modulating function. The polysaccharides are responsible for this modulating function.

Botanical Name:  Hydrocotyle Asiatica syn.: centella asiatica
According to pharmacological studies, one outcome of gotu kola’s complex actions is a balanced effect on cells and tissues participating in the process of healing, particularly connective tissues. One of its constituents, asiaticoside, works to stimulate skin repair and strengthen skin, hair, nails and connective tissue (Kartnig, 1988). Recent studies show that the herb has positive effects on the circulatory system. It seems to improve the flow of blood throughout the body by strengthening the veins and capillaries.  In a study, its effects on metabolism in the connective tissue of the vascular wall and on the microcirculation are presented and discussed. The compound, TTFCA, found in centella asiatica. is effective in venous insufficiency, reducing ankle edema, foot swelling, capillary filtration rate and by improving microcirculatory parameters. The compound was well tolerated and no unwanted effects were observed.

    About BioMed Health

Founded in 1992 by a world renowned medical researcher, BioMed Health has developed nutritional formulas which incorporate research and knowledge from leading health professionals from around the world.  Their products embrace the best of western science and eastern medicine, comprising of both Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurvedic Medicine.

    Traditional Chinese Medicine
Originating in China, the theory and techniques of Traditional Chinese Medicine have been developed and refined for more than 2,000 years.  In the 1940’s, the Chinese government organized various schools and practices into a single system that could be transformed into a network of colleges and hospitals to train practitioners and treat the public. They called this system Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). TCM is a complete medical system for diagnosis and treatment. The individual is seen as an integrated whole.  Every part, process, thought, and emotion within the individual is considered in terms of its contribution to the healthy functioning of the whole person. Each disease and disorder is not seen as an isolated event but as an outward manifestation of the whole person being out of balance.

Two of the most important parameters assessed during the diagnostic process in TCM are the flow of Qi (pronounced “chi”) in the meridians and the balance of Yin and Yang. Qi is our vital force—the energy of all physiological, emotional, and spiritual activity. It circulates throughout the body in a system of channels (known as meridians). There are 12 primary meridians, eight extraordinary meridians, and thousands of smaller meridians that interconnect the whole system. Each of the 12 primary meridians connects to a vital organ and influences the functioning of that organ. For one to be healthy the Qi must be in adequate supply and be able to flow freely through the meridians. Illness is associated with blockage in the flow of Qi, leading to accumulations in some areas and to deficiencies in others. The concept of Yin and Yang refers to a dynamic balance between opposites within the person, such as hot and cold, moist and dry, and movement and stasis. One’s yin and yang must be in relative balance for one to be in good health.

For most health concerns, a series of treatments is usually recommended including herbal treatments, acupuncture, dietary and lifestyle recommendations, and exercise and stress-reduction techniques through T’ai Chi/ Qi Gong exercises.   A general rule is the longer the health concern has been present, the longer the course of treatments will be necessary to cure it.  An emphasis is always placed on educating the patient to treat and prevent illness through living a more healthful lifestyle so that a minimum of intervention will be necessary to maintain wellness.

    Ayurvedic Medicine
From India, Ayurveda (meaning the “science of life”) is one of the oldest health care systems.  A holistic medical system, Ayurveda is based upon the universal natural law of balancing the five elements (ether, air, fire, water and earth) that make up the physical body.  According to Ayurveda, health is a state of total balance between the body, mind, senses and the soul.  When one or more of the elements go out of balance because of improper diet and life style, various diseases and mental disturbances can manifest. The key to maintaining physical and mental health is in keeping these elements in harmonic balance through proper diet, herbs and life style, otherwise early aging and various diseases can manifest.

Ayurveda explains that the elements are kept intact in the body by three subtle forces called doshas. The names of these three doshas are vata (wind), pitta (bile), and kapha (phlegm), corresponding to the three elements of the universe: air, fire, and water.  Physical, mental health and social well being are the three important pillars of a healthy human being.  Each of these must be nurtured if the individual is to create health.  Ayurveda brings to life the concepts of preventive health care and health promotion. Ayurvedic medicine utilizes practices such as herbal tonics, dietary changes, meditation, massage and yoga. Treatment is designed to guide the person back to a state of harmony.
