Nature's Life - Selenium 200 mcg. - 100 Vegetarian Capsules
Selenium by Nature's Life
Nature's Life Selenium is an essential mineral mineral and natural antioxidant intended to provide nutritive support for healthy cell maintenance and immune function. Selenium also assists Vitamin E as a compnent of glutathione peroxidase, an antioxidant.
Features & Benefits:
- Selenium is used in the enzyme glutathione peroxidase, a powerful antioxidant that protects the body from free radical damage.
- All components of the immune system require selenium,2 including macrophages and lymphocytes.
- People, especially vegetarians, may need selenium supplements since they often do not get enough in the diet.
- Nature’s Life offers the same food-form yeast-based selenium used in a recent double-blind study.
Benefits of Selenium
Selenium is an integral part of glutathione peroxidase, a powerful antioxidant enzyme which helps protect all cells from free radical damage. If selenium levels are adequate vitamin E is spared for use elsewhere. In people deficient in selenium, the antioxidant glutathione peroxidase has been observed to be significantly lower. At selenium levels slightly higher than what is normally considered adequate, glutathione peroxidase levels increase.
Low serum levels of selenium are associated with impaired immunity. When selenium supplements were taken, levels of natural killer immune cells increased 59%. Researchers suggest selenium supplements because the amount of selenium required for strong immune function is higher (200 to 400 mcg) than what is normally consumed in the diet (about 100 mcg).
Selenium supplementation increased circulating levels of glutathione peroxidase significantly, improving lung function and decreasing hypersensitivity, in a placebo-controlled study. People in areas of high air pollution may particularly need selenium supplements since pollutants can decrease the activity of all antioxidants, including the selenium-based ones.
Low selenium levels also effect the heart. In one study, low HDL-cholesterol (the “good” cholesterol), high blood pressure and “sticky” blood platelets were more common in the selenium-deficient group.
Since selenium levels in soil vary greatly, selenium in plant foods also varies. Vegetarians may be at risk of significantly lower intakes of selenium than non-vegetarians. Researchers recommend supplementation. Acting as an antioxidant, selenium helps protect us from both acute and chronic toxic doses of two heavy metals, cadmium and mercury, according to trace minerals expert, Dr. W. Mertz.
Our yeast-based selenium is pure Selenomax from Nutrition 21—the same selenium used in many positive studies that describe the benefits of supplemental selenium.
In 1996, FDA announced a new 70 mcg. RDI (Recommended Daily Intake) for selenium. Kidney, liver, other meats and some seafood, such as tuna, are the best food sources of selenium. Whole grains, seeds, nuts and garlic contain significant amounts of selenium if grown in selenium-rich soil. Fruits, vegetables and drinking water do not contain much selenium.
Selenium at doses up to 700 mcg per day does not produce any signs of toxicity although higher doses (1,000 mcg or more) can cause symptoms of toxicity.
Minerals are inorganic substances mined from the earth, meaning they are not of plant or animal origin. They exist naturally on and in the earth and many are critical parts of human tissue and are termed “essential” nutrients. Of the 92 naturally occurring elements, the 14 minerals that have been shown by research to be essential to human health are: calcium, chromium, copper, fluorine, iodine, iron, magnesium, manganese, molybdenum, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, sodium and zinc. Essential macrominerals are those we need in significant quantities (such as calcium) – usually measured in milligrams, and essential trace minerals are those we need in minute quantities (such as selenium) – usually measured in micrograms (one microgram [mcg] equals 1/1,000th of a milligram [mg]).
These 14 essential minerals are crucial to the growth and production of bones, teeth, hair, blood, nerves, skin, vitamins, enzymes and hormones; and the healthy functioning of nerve transmission, blood circulation, fluid regulation, cellular integrity, energy production and muscle contraction.
Minerals work in combination with each other and with other nutrients, so imbalances of any mineral can cause health problems–too little of any essential mineral can lead to deficiency diseases, and too much of any mineral can be toxic.
We get these essential minerals primarily through the foods we eat. Good sources of essential minerals include fruits, vegetables, meats, nuts, beans and dairy products. Unfortunately, much of the soil in which food is grown has been depleted of these nutritive minerals, therefore the mineral content in food is reduced. We also obtain some minerals from the water we drink, but the amounts vary widely.
Mineral availability and absorption is also affected as foods are cooked, processed and refined, and many naturally occurring minerals in food are removed. A daily mineral supplement is not a substitute for a healthy diet, but can ensure we get the minerals we need for optimal health.
This powerful antioxidant works closely with vitamin E and supports critical antioxidant enzyme functions. As an antioxidant, selenium may reduce the risk of abnormal cell growth, while supporting cardiovascular health. Seafood and organ meats such as liver and kidney are high in selenium, whereas selenium levels in grains and vegetables vary widely, depending on local soil content.
No more than 200 mcg of selenium daily is recommended for general use, because of possible toxicity. Excessive intakes of selenium can affect the functioning of enzymes and normal bone and cartilage development in fetuses, according to animal studies. In milligram amounts (75 mg/day), selenium can cause nausea, loss of hair and nails, skin abnormalities and nerve damage.
