The pituitary gland is a small 1 centimeter long body that is attached to the hypothalmus at the base of the brain. This area of the brain controls almost all body functions through a network or hierarchy of releasing factors and hormones which control the rate of growth, metablic rate, electrolyte balance, ovulation and lactation. The hypothalamus secretes peptide hormones into the bloodstream to control the function of the entire endocrine system.

The pituitary gland can be divided into two parts: The anterior and posterior which are physiologically and biochemically different. The anterior pituitary secretes thyrotropin which stimulates the thyroid, somatotropin or growth hormone which stimulates growth throughout the entire body, corticotropin which stimulates the adrenal gland, and FSH, LSH & prolatin which stimulate the ovaries, uterus and breasts respectively. The posterior pituitary has been found to secrete the two hormones vaspopressin and oxytocin. Vasoporessin controls the rention of water in the body and it prevents the excess loss of electrolytes and water by causing the irreabsorption in the kidneys. Oxytocin affects the uterus causing contractions both during labor and sexual orgasm.

Because the pituitary gland affects the entire endocrine system, it is sometimescalled the master gland.
