Better Botanicals Botanical Hand & Body Lotion FAQ's
How do you choose which herbs to use?
The herbs are chosen because they have a long history of successful use in skin and hair care: Their products are based on "Ayurveda." It is the world’s oldest and most widely practiced school of herbal medicine, originating in India 5,000 years ago. Most of their products are manufactured under Ayurvedic license (distinct from a cosmetic license). Ayurveda determines the herbal blends and the herbs determine product aesthetics.
Ayurveda determines the herbs, the herbs determine both efficacy and aesthetics. Efficacy is the primary reason they use the herbs they do.
Many of the herbs are so specific to their Indian origin, they don’t even have English names. Pick up the hair oil and read the 8 herbs from Bhringraj to Jataamansi. Bhringraj is a great example - this is a Sanskrit word. The Hindi word is "Keshraja", which literally translated means "ruler of the hair." This herb has been used for so long as a hair tonic that its very name reflects its use!
What makes your products effective?
The difference is that Better Botanicals uses the herbs in their natural form. For example, one Amla fruit, about as big as a walnut, has as much Vitamin C as 26 oranges. Therefore, they use Amla extract, instead of synthesized Vitamin C, in their Amla Shine Shampoo. The US government initiated the planting of Amla plantations in Florida during WWII as a source of Vitamin C in case it became scarce during the war.
They believe that things are more effective when used in their natural form for 2 key reasons:
- Synthesized ingredients tend to break down and lose efficacy more easily (they are less stable because they are simpler compounds) 2)In their natural form, elements work together in a more complex fashion to achieve greater efficacy (like the example of meadowsweet, which yields the chemical formula for aspirin, but works with other natural compounds to provide buffering agents for the stomach).
Why are your products Paraben-free?
Their position on Parabens as preservatives
They would like to clarify, and help you understand where they are in regards to the use of methyl and propyl – parabens as preservatives in their products.
The new ownership here at Better Botanicals, L.L.C. is committed to ensuring that ALL of their natural personal care items are as “clean” as possible. They have taken painstaking steps to ensure that they offer both effective and safe products that you and your consumers can trust. Their highly potent herbal line is founded on the belief that “health is beauty, and beauty is health”. Their true core belief is grounded in “truth in labeling”, and is a value based on their personal integrity and on their combined 55 plus years experience in, and their love for, the natural products industry.
Currently, they manufacture only 3 products using a synthetic or paraben based preservative system. They are:
- Amla Shampoo
- Neem Shampoo
- Pure Gloss Conditioner
First, there are very few formulas in their line that originally had parabens in them, and some “may” still be in the market. These items are safe, of course, and when sold through will be replaced with paraben-free offerings.
Secondly, there may be some original packaging that states that the product contains parabens – when, in fact, it does not. This has occurred because the previous owners were not in the financial position to change out or discard their original expensive packaging. None of the products manufactured from mid-2006 on have parabens, irrespective of what may still show on some of the packaging in the marketplace.
Please be aware that they are a "paraben free" line and are committed to a healthy, clean, safe, and beautiful planet. By the end of 2008 all of the packaging should reflect the true nature of the ingredients – "paraben free". Thank you for your patience and understanding.
Are Better Botanicals Products 100% Natural?
Although some of their products are, they have never claimed to be 100% natural. Most of their products are between 98 and 99.5% natural.
Better Botanical products are so natural that color variations might be seen from batch to batch. This is especially true of the more colorful products, such as the Rose-Tulsi Toner (note: it is the Kamala which makes it red, not rosewater, which is not red). The changes in color reflect the season in which the herbs were grown, how much sunlight and water the herbs received, etc. The change in color is one of the signs of a truly natural product.
There are, however, 2 ways to alter this:
- Use a chemical color to make it uniform from batch to batch, which they cannot do under the Ayurvedic license, nor would they want to
- Put the product in an opaque bottle so you can’t see it, which is against their philosophy of openness
Color variations are often considered a "badge of honor" when considering a natural product!
Does Better Botanicals Use Preservatives?
Their products are paraben free. All ingredients are listed on each product, and it is the unique and exact combination of those ingredients which creates an environment hostile to bacteria and mold. Everything they produce is USP challenge tested for safety and longevity. Using their all-natural preservative system, they can boast a 24-month shelf life.
Check the labels. If they are not listing a preservative, look for some form of alcohol. Alcohol is a preservative. It is also drying to the skin. Better Botanicals does not use alcohol.
About Better Botanicals
At Better Botanicals, their goal is to provide the purest herbal skin care possible. They use no synthetic colors or fragrances, no alcohol, no “bandwagon” ingredients, mineral oil or animal ingredients. They test only on happy, human volunteers. They are committed to providing these products at a price point affordable to more people. Everyone deserves the opportunity to use natural skin care at its best without breaking the pocketbook.
Launched nationally in 1998, their products are based on “Ayurveda.” It is the world’s oldest and most widely practiced school of herbal medicine, originating in India 5,000 years ago. Most of their products are manufactured under Ayurvedic license (distinct from a cosmetic license). Ayurveda determines the herbal blends and the herbs determine product aesthetics. Their concept is to infuse nature’s healing qualities into each preparation to help stimulate the skin’s natural ability to find its way back to balanced health. Their credo is ‘care, not camouflage.’ They rely on Ayurveda’s pure, balancing herbs to offer products that work with the body’s natural rhythm and intelligence to enhance both health and beauty.
They are a condensed line of products and intend to stay simple. Because they are not a “treatment line” per se, they can capitalize on the purity, efficacy, and functionality of the products. They are committed to education and lending support to their stores as often as needed. One of the more positive aspects of a small line is the ability to create and maintain closer relationships with their customers. Every opportunity they have to educate is an opportunity to sell.
What is the difference between Better Botanicals and other product lines?
The products are HERBAL. Many product lines claim to be herbal, however, here is the Better Botanicals difference: For an herbal product to have any functional value, a very high herbal content is needed. Their herbal content ranges from 15% (shampoo) to 100% (steams). Their moisturizers have a 30 - 35% herbal content. Other products out there add an herbal “image ingredient” (1 or 2%) and then make an alpha-hydroxy the active ingredient.
With Better Botanicals, the herbs are the active ingredients and are selected based on efficacy. Better Botanicals does not add anything for fragrance or color. The herbs that are selected by BB and Ayurvedic physicians determine the fragrance and color.
