About Celestial Seasonings

A Story of People and Passion
In 1969, a group of passionate young entrepreneurs founded Celestial Seasonings upon the belief that their flavorful, all-natural herbal teas could help people live healthier lives. They harvested fresh herbs from the Rocky Mountains by hand, and then dried, blended and packaged them in hand-sewn muslin bags to be sold at local health food stores. By staying committed to their vision, the founders of Celestial Seasonings turned their cottage industry into an almost overnight success.

Today, Celestial Seasonings is the largest specialty tea manufacturer in North America. We serve more than 1.6 billion cups of tea every year, and we source more than 100 different ingredients from over 35 countries to create our delicious, all-natural herbal, green, red, white, chai and wellness teas. But most importantly, we're still about people and passion.

Celestial Seasonings Social Responsibility

Truth
Celestial Seasonings was founded in 1969 by a visionary group of young entrepreneurs with an ambitious goal: to make the world a better place by sharing their knowledge of the truly amazing health benefits of herbs. They were determined to find success while making their new company "an example that business can work in peace and harmony with the planet."

Forty years have passed, and Celestial Seasonings remains true to their founders' mission to consistently provide "superior products" that help people live healthier lives, while still maintaining "high ideals" like farmer-friendly trading practices and the use of sustainable materials.

Celestial Seasonings ingredients come from all over the world these days, but their all-natural teas have always been created in their hometown of Boulder, Colorado. Celestial Seasonings passionate employees formulate the recipes, blend the ingredients, design the boxes and package the tea – just like when their founders dried handpicked herbs in a Boulder barn.

Celestial Seasonings commitment to authenticity has made us the largest Specialty Tea manufacturer in the North America, serving more than 1.6 billion cups per year, and one of their very first blends – Sleepytime – is still the most beloved herbal tea in the world. Celestial Seasonings knows that their success is due to the millions of tea enthusiasts who share their belief in the truly original blend of superior products and high ideals that those young entrepreneurs began more than four decades ago.

Beauty
Celestial Seasonings Recycled Packaging

Celestial Seasonings thinks their boxes are just as important as the goodness they hold, so they always created beautiful packaging adorned with commissioned works of art and thoughtful, inspiring words. But with a tea box that uses 100% recycled paperboard, including 35% post-consumer waste, and can be recycled again when empty, the beauty of their boxes isn't limited to appearances.

Celestial Seasonings Amazing Tea Bag
Celestial Seasonings natural fiber tea bags are manufactured through a totally chlorine-free (TCF) process, meaning that no dioxin is released into the environment. Plus, they never contain starch or gluten, and they're completely biodegradable and compostable – making them better for you and for our planet. Best of all, because Celestial Seasonings unique pillow-style tea bag doesn't need a string, tag, staple or individual wrapper, Celestial Seasonings saves 3.5 million pounds of waste from entering landfills every year!

Celestial Seasonings Retail Displays
Celestial Seasonings puts as much thought into the retail displays in your store as they put into their boxes and tea bags. Celestial Seasonings new natural brown craft paper displays are made with 100% recycled paperboard, including at least 90% post-consumer content, and their display headers are made from Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Mixed Sources Certified material. Celestial Seasonings also encourages their retailers to re-use or recycle their displays again when the tea is gone!

Celestial Seasonings Ongoing Commitment to Recycling
Celestial Seasonings continues their efforts to make their production facility as earth-friendly as their packaging. Celestial Seasonings recycles more than 500,000 pounds of material every year, including paperboard, shrink wrap, scrap metal, pallets and other materials. In fact, they have reduced the amount of waste they send to landfills by more than 60% in just the past few years!

From Celestial Seasonings increasing use of wind-generated electricity to power their factory, to expanded recycling and efficiency efforts in their office, to using compostable and biodegradable items in their tour center, café and tea shop, they are extending their commitment to the environment to every corner of their building.

Quality
Celestial Seasonings teas are always 100% natural. They source more than 100 of the finest all-natural raw materials and ingredients from more than 35 countries around the world, and they expertly blend them into healthy, delicious teas that are always free of artificial preservatives, colors and flavors.

Straight from the Source
Celestial Seasonings knows that their products are 100% natural because they go straight to the source to obtain their teas, herbs and botanicals whenever possible. Their farming partners understand their strict standards for cleanliness, purity, freshness and flavor, and strive to provide ingredients that meet these requirements. By purchasing straight from the source, Celestial Seasonings can blend teas that consistently offer the perfect combination of great taste, exciting variety and health benefits that support everyday wellness.

Committed to Sustainability
For 40 years, Celestial Seasonings botanicals purchasers have traveled the world to meet with family farmers and tea estate managers who produce their herbs, teas and spices. The long-standing relationships they have established with their farmers enable them to do more than ensure that only the highest quality ingredients make it into their teas – they also allow them to promote continuously earth-friendly harvests through sustainable agricultural practices.

Agriculture is considered sustainable when the planting, growing and harvesting of crops are all done in ways that don't negatively affect the land's ability to produce again in future years. Sustainable farming combines the latest innovations in farming techniques with time-honored traditional methods in areas like site selection, planting diversity, water conservation and soil quality improvement.

Everyone benefits from Celestial Seasonings commitment to sustainable ingredient sourcing. Our planet is spared from unfriendly agricultural practices that reduce the land's productivity. Celestial Seasonings farmers are given the environmental and economic resources to preserve their craft for future generations. And you get the widest variety of healthy, great-tasting teas available anywhere!

Passionate Experts
Quality ingredients are important, but also rely on a team of quality people to make our delicious, all-natural teas. Many of Celestial Seasonings key Research and Development employees have each been with the company for more than 30 years and are recognized as experts in their fields – ensuring that every cup of Celestial Seasonings tea meets or exceeds their rigorous standards.

Take Celestial Seasonings Blendmaster, for example. Charlie Baden has been with the company since 1975. He personally samples every batch of tea they blend to ensure it matches our Gold Standard for consistency, quality and flavor. Celestial Seasonings botanicals purchasers, Kay Wright and Doug Brandmier, have both spent decades traveling the world finding the best herbs, teas and spices and discovering exciting new ingredients for their blends.

These passionate experts – and many more just like them – personally ensure that the world's best ingredients come together perfectly every time to create the world's best teas.

Goodness
Celestial Seasonings has always believed that the goodness of their teas should be exceeded only by the goodness of their actions toward their world. Celestial Seasonings knows that their efforts truly make a difference in their local community and all around the world.

Ethical Trade
Because Celestial Seasonings has had relationships with many growers around the world for more than 30 years (some spanning three generations of the same family), it's important to them that their workers are treated fairly and with respect. That's why Celestial Seasonings does their best to ensure that all of their ingredients – from chamomile grown in an Egyptian village to spearmint harvested in the Pacific Northwest – are produced in accordance with their Ethical Trade philosophy.

Together with the growers – Celestial Seasonings partners in Celestial Seasonings dedication to Ethical Trade – they ensure that the botanicals Celestial Seasonings purchases are brought to market at a price that accurately reflects the cost of labor associated with their production. The assurance of a fair market price nurtures local businesses, creates jobs and empowers their farmers to continue growing their herbs, teas and botanicals for many more years to come.
