Angina: Main Image
Ease the pain in your chest by paying closer attention to your coronary arteries. According to research or other evidence, the following self-care steps may be helpful.
  • Understand the warning signs

Seek immediate medical attention if you develop symptoms of new or worsening chest pain

  • Talk to your doctor

Ask about medications prescribed to treat and prevent angina, such as verapamil (Calan, Verelan), diltiazem (Cardizem, Tiazac), nitroglycerin (Nitrostat, Nitro-Dur), atenolol (Tenormin), metoprolol (Lopressor, Toprol XL), and isosorbide mononitrate (Imdur)

  • Add L-carnitine to your daily routine

Take 1 gram of this nutritional supplement two or three times a day to improve heart function and ease symptoms of angina

  • Mix in some magnesium

Take 200 to 300 mg of this mineral supplement twice a day to reduce the risk of exercise-induced chest pain

  • Consider aspirin therapy

Try over-the-counter aspirin (Bayer Low Adult Strength, Ecotrin Adult Low Strength) to lessen the likelihood of heart attacks
